Bridget Jones’ diary

Conventions of an Opening Sequence
Introduced to main character

This is the first we see of the main character. We can tell that she is
the main character because we follow her throughout the opening
sequence. We being to ask ourselves questions such as: who is she?
Where is she?
Titles

From the titles we find out who the main characters are played
by, Renee Zellweger. We find out the title of the film as ‘Bridget
Jones’ Dairy’ which indicates to us that the main character is
Bridget Jones. We gain knowledge of the production team as
well as the production and distribution company.
Music

At this point in the opening
sequence she is doing a voice
over. This tells us that she is
British due to the British
accent.

The music tells us the tone of the film. The
music ‘all by myself’ indicates that she
feels depressed and possibly vulnerable.
At the point we feel sympathy for her
singing to herself alone in her flat as this is
what we assume someone who is alone
and emotionally broken to do. This sets
the genre of the film as a romantic
comedy as the music has emotional lyrics
in it.
Setting.

From the setting we can see that she lives in a flat. We do not know if
she lives alone or with someone else at this point, however we later find
out that she lives alone.
Unanswered questions

From the opening sequence we being to ask
ourselves why she is drinking so much and why
she is living alone at her age. We wonder why
she looks so depressed and miserable and we
want to find out her general background
information.
