Dams & industrial uses from the 1600’s. Restoration & preservation of green space began with the parkway construction in early 1900’s. Yet still a dumping ground in 1970’s, and most folks never knew it was there.
The privatization of NYC’s municipal solid waste handling in the wake of the closure of the fresh Kills landfill in 1997 brought thousands of additional trucks to the streets of Hunts Point.
Parks eyed it, but community advocates saved it for parkland.
