The ethics of performance monitoring-private sector perspectiveDavid Quek
Increasingly medical practice is coming under intense scrutiny as to what is appropriate and affordable care, including serious considerations of patient safety issues and protection. Medical professionalism must be consciously adhered to as we try and find the best health care for our patients at the best value and outcomes for our patients themselves, and also for society at large. In view of escalating health care costs, physician autonomy to practice as he or she likes or deems fit has now come under siege with more and more performance monitoring, not just for appropriateness, but also for outcomes, necessity and cost-effectiveness. Physician' vested interests must be tempered with evidence-based benefits or at least be associated with no increase in harm or incur affordability issues. Fraudulent physician malfeasance are now being uncovered via whistle-blowers, or through greater more meticulous audit of various validated performance measures, and those physicians found to have flouted these due to pecuniary self-interests, overuse of tests or procedures have been found guilty and sanctioned with heavy fines, return of reimbursements as well as imprisonment, and erasure from medical registries and the removal of license to practice.

Feeding plate for a newborn with Cleft Palate.pptxSatvikaPrasad
A feeding plate is a prosthetic device used for newborns with a cleft palate to assist in feeding and improve nutrition intake. From a prosthodontic perspective, this plate acts as a barrier between the oral and nasal cavities, facilitating effective sucking and swallowing by providing a more normal anatomical structure. It helps to prevent milk from entering the nasal passage, thereby reducing the risk of aspiration and enhancing the infant's ability to feed efficiently. The feeding plate also aids in the development of the oral muscles and can contribute to better growth and weight gain. Its custom fabrication and proper fitting by a prosthodontist are crucial for ensuring comfort and functionality, as well as for minimizing potential complications. Early intervention with a feeding plate can significantly improve the quality of life for both the infant and the parents.

Conclave on “Legal and Ethical Challenges in Healthcare Ecosystem”
18th
to 20th
May, 2017 at Manekshaw Convention Centre,
New Delhi, India
Modern hospital is a matrix organization, an amalgam of social, architectural and technological advancements. Healthcare
industry is growing rapidly but the core ingredients such as care, compassion, empathy, trustworthiness and ethical
considerations are losing their fabric. We live in a well-informed society, where patients, relatives, and others are inclined to
question healthcare providers when medical outcomes are not acceptable. Ethics is considered a standard of behaviour and a
concept of right and wrong in any situation. The primary principles of ethics include beneficence, non-malfeasance, justice
and respect for autonomy. There are legal and ethical dilemmas associated with delivery of healthcare. It is imperative for
healthcare professionals to be well conversant with law and ethics - the pillars of healthcare ecosystem. The evolving
technologies pose new challenges every day to the established tenets of medical practice. These challenges often involve
social issues and ethical dilemmas with decisions affecting life and its continuity. Recent issues include reproductive rights,
2. fetal health, stem cell research, euthanasia, DNR and confidentiality of records in cyber domain. Healthcare professionals
need to be concerned about how law and ethics impact not only their respective professions, but also how these issues affect
the consumers and society at large. Spiralling cost of healthcare leads to questions regarding availability, accessibility,
affordability and equitable distribution of healthcare resources. It is thus the felt need of the hour to introspect and deliberate
on these much relevant contemporary legal and ethical issues.
Against this backdrop, Research Foundation of Hospital and Healthcare Administration (RFHHA) in collaboration with
