How to form ‘comparative
adjectives’?
 Adjectives of one syllable, add –er:
long – longer short – shorter
 Adjectives of one syllable end in –e, add –r
only:
nice – nicer late – later
 Adjectives of one syllable and in consonant-
vowel-consonant, double the last consonant
and add –er:
big – bigger hot - hotter

 Adjectives of two syllables end in –y, we
change the ‘y’ into ‘i’ and add –er:
