This document defines common online terminology used in communication and sharing information over the internet. It provides definitions for terms like email, podcasts, wikis, social bookmarking, HTML, VoIP, online chat, WWW, streaming, blogs, social networking, URLs, and web feeds. Each term is concisely defined in a sentence or two explaining its meaning and purpose.

E-mail stands for
Electronic Mail. It
is used for
communicating to
other people,
sending files to
someone even if
the person is from

3. WiKi
The term
“WiKi” comes
from the
Hawaiian
phrase “wiki
wiki” which
means super
fast.
WiKi is a website that
allows users to add

on that site using their
own Web browser.
This ended up being
created mainly by a
collaborative effort of
the site visitors. A
great example of a
large WiKi is the
Wikipedia, a free
encyclopedia in many
languages that anyone
can edit.

4. Social Bookmarking
Whenever you
share a website to
someone, that is
already
considered as
Social
Bookmarking.
Instead of saving them to
your web browser, you
are saving them to your
web which makes
sharing it to others
easily.
There are a lot of
Social
Bookmarking
sites and all of
them are open
to comments
and tags.

5. HTML
HTML stands for Hyper-text
Markup Language.
This is the language that Web
pages are written in. Also known
as hypertext documents, Web
pages must conform to the rules
of HTML in order to be displayed
correctly in a Web browser. The
HTML syntax is based on a list of
tags that describe the page's
format and what is displayed on
the Web page.
Fortunately, the HTML language is
relatively easy to learn. Even more
fortunately (so much for good
grammar), many Web development
programs allow you to create Web
pages using a graphical interface.
These programs allow you to place
objects and text on the page and
the HTML code is written for you.

6. VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet
Protocol.
Technology that allows
voice to be carried
over internet
connections or
other networks (which are
not designed specifically to
carry voice) using Internet
Protocols (IP).
Although comparatively
inexpensive, this method (as yet) does
not provide real full-duplex communications.
It is because, unlike regular (circuit switched)
phone networks, IP (packet switched)
networks break the voice signals into chunks
(packets) that arrive at the destination
through different routes and at different
intervals for reassembly in the
correct order by the receiving device.
This process often results in discernible gaps in
the flow of a conversation. Also called
internet telephone, IP telephony.

7. Online Chat
Whenever you chat
with somebody over
the Internet, you are
already doing an online
chat.
You communicate through a computer
by the means of typing what you want
to say to the person.
WWW
WWW is the acronym for
World Wide Web
It is based on these 3
technologies:
1. HTML
2. HTTP
3. Web servers and
Web browsers
It consists of pages that
can be accessed using a
Web browser. The
Internet is the actual
network of networks
where all the
information resides.

8. Streaming
Streaming is when you
watch a show that is
not available in your
country or on your
television and you get
to watch it live through
different online
streaming websites.
However, certain audio and video files like Real
Audio and QuickTime documents can be
streaming files, meaning you can watch a video
or listen to a sound file while it's being
downloaded to your computer. With a fast
Internet connection, you can actually stream live
audio or video to your computer.

9. Blog
It is the short
term for Web
Log.
Tumblr is just an
example of a blog
website wherein
people that have
accounts share
photos, gifs and
other more.
Social networking
Anybody who knows
how to create and
publish a Web page
can publish their
own blog. Some
Web hosts have
made it even easier
by creating an
interface where
users can simply
type a text entry and
hit "publish" to
publish their blog.
It is an online platform
wherein people can create
their own account and have
their own profile with their
personal information in it.
Not everyone would be
able to view your profile
but only the ones you have
confirmed of their friend
requests.
Best example of this is
Facebook.

10. URL
URL stands for Uniform
Resource Locator.
It is the internet
address usually
consisting of the
access protocol like
http. It is usually
displayed on top
inside an address bar.
This is the one
you send to
someone when
you are sharing a
website.
Web Feed
A continuous
transmission of data,
consisting
of news updates,
to web sites through a
syndicated news service
provider. Subscribers
receive the news feed,
also known as a web feed,
as summaries or links that
refer the user back to
the original news source.
