Gold Holds Advance After Climbing Most in Two Weeks
on Stimulus
Gold held gains after increasing the most in two weeks yesterday as U.S.
economic data signaled the Federal Reserve may continue its asset purchase
program to support the recovery. Outflows from investor holdings slowed. Spot
gold added as much as 0.3 percent to $1,415.15 an ounce and was at $1,411.80
at 12:19 p.m. in Singapore. Prices jumped 1.7 percent yesterday, the most since
May 20, as U.S. manufacturing unexpectedly contracted in May. Cash silver lost
0.2 percent to $22.6819 an ounce. Gold fell 16 percent this year after a 12-year
bull run as investors sold the metal from exchange-traded products at a record
pace on speculation the Fed may taper quantitative easing. Assets in the SPDR
Gold Trust, the biggest bullion-backed ETP, were unchanged for a third day
yesterday after expanding on May 29 for the first time in almost three weeks.
Copper Futures Rise on Freeport Mine Shutdown, China
Data
Copper futures climbed the most in more than three weeks as a shutdown at the
world’s second-biggest mine and an unexpected increase in a Chinese
manufacturing gauge fueled supply concerns. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold
Inc. said a probe of accidents at its Grasberg mine in Indonesia may halt work for
as long as three months. An official purchasing managers’ index released June 1 in
China, the biggest consumer of industrial metal, rose to 50.8 in May from 50.6 a
month earlier. Economists in a Bloomberg survey forecast 50, the dividing line
between expansion and contraction.
