The project is designed to reach out to community residents, discover their needs, assets and opportunities, and then create a proposal for how to address those for the future improvement of Cleveland's Campus District.

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we published our first ReimaginED report. When we first drafted ReimaginED, we set out to expose systemic challenges in our nation’s K-12 education system and to highlight some of the innovative solutions edtech entrepreneurs were developing to address these challenges. In last year’s report, we showcased ways technology could help our school system become an escalator to opportunity for all.
A lot has changed in three years, including our spinout from NewSchools to Reach Capital. Edtech investment has hit an all time high with a variety of new funders entering the space. As the market begins to mature, global edtech brands are emerging with solutions that are improving educational outcomes and serving millions of students, teachers, and families.
Even with these changes, however, a lot remains the same. The escalator to social mobility remains broken with unequal access to quality education. Meeting individual student needs is still a challenge and grows more pressing as children in US public schools are more diverse than ever. Moreover, our education system is not designed to prepare children for the demands of today's knowledge economy. We're still stuck in a system that is largely manufacturing-based, which falls short on important skills such as coding, creativity, and synthesis. All these challenges and more have led to increasing demands on teachers as both their role and their responsibilities evolve, with little to no support in the transition.
This year’s publication, rebranded as “Reach Capital’s 2016 Edtech Outlook”, touches on these persisting challenges, while also highlighting key drivers that make us optimistic about the potential of technology to improve access and opportunity for kids. This year, our publication is not a roundup of everything in K-12 edtech, but rather our perspective on the challenges,opportunities and promising solutions in the space that we find most compelling. Given our unique vantage point, we also provide a peek “around the corner” into emerging solutions that align with our mission. CSO Webinar: Extending Your Reach
The webinar provided best practices for colleges and community-based organizations (CBOs) to develop partnerships to support first-generation students. The panelists from various colleges and CBOs discussed finding and researching CBOs, developing communication systems, evaluating relationships, and lessons learned. They emphasized the importance of commitment, flexibility, transparency, and creating long-term relationships to improve college access and completion rates. Contact information was provided for representatives from Lawrence University, Holy Names University, College Track, and College Possible.
Cardozo Kick Off Presentation (Final)
This project is a collaborative effort between two advocacy groups, 21CSF and SHAPPE, along with Cardozo High School teachers, students, parents, and community members. The groups are working to improve parent and community involvement at Cardozo through the development of a Parent/Community Connector Center. The goals of the center are to increase student enrollment, provide space for community activities, and improve communication between the school and parents/community. Challenges include declining enrollment, limited parent involvement, and limited communication resources.

DWC provides ongoing guidance to students through monthly meetings and communications. This includes helping students identify and develop their talents, research summer programs/internships, evaluate and improve their academics, and gain authentic community service experience. DWC also assists with the college application process and aims to help students find colleges that match their interests through a holistic approach.
Preparing ALL Students for College, Career and Life
The Coachella Valley Economic Partnership works to prepare all students in the Coachella Valley for college, careers, and life through their Regional Plan for College and Career Readiness. They bring together local businesses, education, and community partners to provide students with career exploration opportunities like internships and job shadowing. Their goal is to align education and workforce needs to help students pursue higher-wage jobs in the region's priority industry sectors of healthcare, advanced technology, and arts, media and entertainment.
CSO Webinar: Extending Your Reach
The webinar provided best practices for colleges and community-based organizations (CBOs) to develop partnerships to support first-generation students. The panelists from various colleges and CBOs discussed finding and researching CBOs, developing communication systems, evaluating relationships, and lessons learned. They emphasized the importance of commitment, flexibility, transparency, and creating long-term relationships to improve college access and completion rates. Contact information was provided for representatives from Lawrence University, Holy Names University, College Track, and College Possible.
Cardozo Kick Off Presentation (Final)
This project is a collaborative effort between two advocacy groups, 21CSF and SHAPPE, along with Cardozo High School teachers, students, parents, and community members. The groups are working to improve parent and community involvement at Cardozo through the development of a Parent/Community Connector Center. The goals of the center are to increase student enrollment, provide space for community activities, and improve communication between the school and parents/community. Challenges include declining enrollment, limited parent involvement, and limited communication resources.
MCS prepares to set new path toward better learning, better stewardship
After several months of planning and discussion, Marion Community Schools officials on Thursday evening revealed their recommendation for reconfiguration of the school system, to bring costs down, improve academic programs, and enhance opportunities for local students.
UA Mid-Session Report 50th Session
The mid-session report from the Undergraduate Assembly provides updates on their advocacy initiatives and expenditures from their reserve fund over the past semester. Some of their key accomplishments include passing proposals to provide free menstrual products in campus bathrooms, increase funding for social and cultural student groups, and protect students' academic breaks by restricting assignments during holidays. The report aims to increase transparency and accountability to the student body on the work and spending of the UA.
Community & Curriculum @ SCUP 2011
This session focuses on recognizing community needs outside the academic environment that allow the institution to creatively develop strategies to facilitate program development and funding. By broadening the concept of the communities served, four exemplary institutions have achieved national stature as resources for government training programs (STEMP), promoting community environmental activism, facilitating lifelong learning, and blurring the line between academic and community environments.
K-64
K-64 is a 5-year education and economic development initiative in Catawba County, NC that aims to prepare students from pre-K through retirement to compete globally and support local companies. The initiative has several partners, including the community college, county, schools, and local companies. It focuses on connecting students to work opportunities through technology integration, soft skills development, work-based learning, and ensuring access to education. Early indicators show it has increased student participation in these programs and reduced absenteeism in schools.

Unlocked Cells
President Bush's decision to allow federal funding for research on existing embryonic stem cell lines opened new doors for medical research in Cleveland. However, researchers caution that understanding how embryonic stem cells function and translating discoveries into clinical applications will be a long process requiring at least a decade of additional research. The decision also reinvigorated debates around the moral and ethical issues surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells.
Dream on East 89th Street
Terrence Spivey is the artistic director of Karamu House in Cleveland, America's oldest African American theater. He wants to return Karamu to its former glory as a premier black theater that launched the careers of many famous actors. Spivey is holding a summer camp to engage local youth in the arts and help revive interest in Karamu. Though the theater struggled in recent decades, Spivey hopes to bring in renowned black playwrights and actors and produce high quality works that reflect Karamu's original mission of celebrating multicultural stories.
The Storyteller
Brendan Ring carries on the family tradition of storytelling. Growing up in a small Irish village, he was surrounded by storytellers sharing cultural traditions and tales orally before the advent of television. As an adult, Ring owns a restaurant and bar in Cleveland called Nighttown, where he entertains customers each night with stories from his vast repertoire of Irish tales, histories, and characters. His favorite story to share is about his grandfather's role as a telegraph operator who covertly sent a message during the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland that alerted the world to the revolution taking place.
Road Warriors
Henry and his 12-year-old son Henny embarked on a 9,000-mile road trip across America in their 1982 VW Vanagon to spend quality time together. Over seven weeks, they drove from their home in Ohio through the central and western United States, camping along the way with their dog Bucky. Henry has a chronic illness called lupus but has remained in good health during the trip. The trip has provided an opportunity for father-son bonding and experiencing the natural beauty of places like Death Valley and Mount Whitney through leisurely exploration off the beaten path.

Philip Resnick is a renowned forensic psychiatrist known for his expertise in evaluating individuals involved in high-profile criminal cases. Preemie Time
Olivia was born prematurely at 25 weeks gestation after her mother Sara went into early labor due to HELLP Syndrome. Weighing only 1 pound 8 ounces at birth, Olivia required intensive care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where she faced many health challenges. After over a month in the NICU receiving respiratory support and treatment, Olivia was making progress but continued to face ups and downs as her organs developed outside of the womb. Her mother Sara was learning to cope with the uncertainty and alien experience of having a premature baby in the NICU.
Living Well at First Sight
1) Kevin Braunschweiger was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 45 and was more concerned about potential impacts to his sex life than death.
2) Early detection is key for genital-pelvic cancers like prostate and testicular cancer. However, many men delay seeking treatment due to embarrassment or fears over impotence and incontinence from surgery.
3) Braunschweiger opted for brachytherapy seed implantation instead of surgery after learning the procedure had similar effectiveness with less risk of side effects. While surgery offers a higher cure rate, radiation allows additional treatment if the initial treatment fails. Early detection and treatment are important for genital cancers.

Now, it is one of the fastest growing fields in medicine due to the obesity epidemic. 1) A grocery store owner in Beit She'an, Israel had his store bombed by a Palestinian man in 2003, killing the owner and his father. The Cleveland Jewish Community Federation has partnered with Beit She'an as a "Sister City" and provided funding to help rebuild the store.
2) The partnership between Cleveland and Beit She'an aims to strengthen the regional economy and connect its diverse communities through student exchanges, staff visits, and economic development programs.

Geriatric oncology
The emerging field of geriatric oncology is changing the way cancer is treated in elderly patients. Geriatric oncologists consider patients' overall health and customize treatments instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach. They are conducting more clinical trials with elderly patients to develop safer and more effective treatments. Additionally, they address social issues like transportation that have prevented some elderly from receiving care. This revolution in care has the potential to prolong survival and quality of life for many elderly cancer patients.

Campus District Collaboration Project (July 23, 2010)
