2. What is OSHPD certification?
OSHPD: the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development,
the California state agency charged with ensuring that hospitals and
other critical healthcare facilities in California are able to continue
operating after an earthquake.
Certification: OSHPD certifies equipment as able to withstand seismic
events. Ordinarily, all equipment subject to OSHPD review must be
individually tested on a shake-table to be certified.
What is OSP preapproval?
OSP: the OSHPD Special Seismic Certification Preapproval program.
OSP facilitates swift review and approval of essential non-structural
components in healthcare facilities to ensure reliability under seismic events.
− Rigorous verification of representative units from a product line — mechanical testing combined
with structural simulation and analysis — is required for preapproval qualification.
− Once a product line is preapproved, units from that line — regardless of size — can be installed
without individual testing.
