1. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition characterized by an unpleasant sensation in the legs and a desire to move them to relieve the discomfort, especially at night or during periods of inactivity.
2. RLS is more common than previously thought, affecting about 5.5% of people over 14 in Europe. It occurs more often in women and the elderly.
3. Symptoms include strange sensations in the legs combined with an urge to move them for relief. The sensations are usually worse at night and during rest. Many people with RLS also experience periodic leg movements during sleep.
