Wal-Mart pleaded guilty to violating environmental laws regarding the handling and disposal of hazardous waste. They paid $81.6 million in fines and penalties for improperly disposing of hazardous materials from their stores in trash bins and sewer systems instead of proper disposal methods. They also pleaded guilty to mishandling pesticides returned by customers. Going forward, Wal-Mart will implement a compliance program to properly handle hazardous waste according to environmental regulations.
