The Orientation Team would like to officially welcome you to the University
of Rochester! You will spend the next four years of your life here growing,
exploring your academic interests, and discovering new passions. It is our hope
that Orientation provides you with the necessary tools and information to navigate
the resources and options offered by the University.
As you experience the week of Orientation, we hope you will take full
advantage of all the programs and events we have planned in order to introduce
you to campus, help you make new friends and inform you about all of the
opportunities available to you. The knowledge you gain during Orientation will
serve you throughout your four years here, and the memories you make this week
will last a lifetime if you are open to the experience. We are thrilled about this
year’s Orientation, and we look forward to meeting you and your new classmates
over the week ahead!

Welcome to the University of Rochester!
Dear Class of 2018,
Welcome! Today marks the formal beginning of your academic journey as a college
student. While I don’t know where that journey will take you, I am certain that if you open
yourself up to the special opportunities that are available to you at the UofR, you will have a
very fulfilling college experience.
Academic advising is an important part of college and I urge you to take full advantage
of your relationship with your pre-major adviser. Over the next weeks and months, that person
will get to know you and your interests; he or she will serve as your guide as you explore the
broad array of classes that are available every semester and he or she will do their best to answer
your questions or point you in the right direction when they’re not sure what the right answer
is. I hope that your adviser will nudge you from time to time by encouraging you to take risks
and to try some things you might not be entirely certain about. Pre-major advising works best
if you communicate with your adviser regularly. Be sure to let your adviser know about your
goals and ambitions…as well as your worries. When you ask your adviser “what classes should
I take?” he or she will respond by saying, “Well, what are you interested in?” Remember, you are
in school to pursue your educational dreams, not someone else’s!
Among my wishes for you in the coming year are: that you make a connection with your
classmates and your hall mates and that you personally discover what it means to be part of the
Rochester community; that you get to know at least one of your professors very well; that you
seek advice from those who are interested in your success; and
that you find one or two passions both inside and outside of class
that are important to you. Good luck and please let me know if I
can be helpful. I know you are going to have a very special year!

Square, the area between Wilson Commons and the Goergen

The superstition about the clock tower is that if you walk under it
and tread on the dandelions, something dreadful will happen to you.
For example, if you’re a prospective student, you won’t be admitted;
if you’re a current student, you won’t graduate on time. So walk
under the clock tower at your own risk.
If you accidentally tempt fate, there is a way to avoid catastrophe.
You’ll need an acorn, a statue, and good aim: Throw an acorn at the
statue of George Eastman in the quad and have it land in the brim
of his hat. You are then absolved. But stock up on acorns just in case
you forget to watch where you’re walking.

  • 1. The Orientation Team would like to officially welcome you to the University of Rochester! You will spend the next four years of your life here growing, exploring your academic interests, and discovering new passions. It is our hope that Orientation provides you with the necessary tools and information to navigate the resources and options offered by the University. As you experience the week of Orientation, we hope you will take full advantage of all the programs and events we have planned in order to introduce you to campus, help you make new friends and inform you about all of the opportunities available to you. The knowledge you gain during Orientation will serve you throughout your four years here, and the memories you make this week will last a lifetime if you are open to the experience. We are thrilled about this year’s Orientation, and we look forward to meeting you and your new classmates over the week ahead! • 2. Welcome to the University of Rochester! Dear Class of 2018, Welcome! Today marks the formal beginning of your academic journey as a college student. While I don’t know where that journey will take you, I am certain that if you open yourself up to the special opportunities that are available to you at the UofR, you will have a very fulfilling college experience. Academic advising is an important part of college and I urge you to take full advantage of your relationship with your pre-major adviser. Over the next weeks and months, that person will get to know you and your interests; he or she will serve as your guide as you explore the broad array of classes that are available every semester and he or she will do their best to answer your questions or point you in the right direction when they’re not sure what the right answer is. I hope that your adviser will nudge you from time to time by encouraging you to take risks and to try some things you might not be entirely certain about. Pre-major advising works best if you communicate with your adviser regularly. Be sure to let your adviser know about your goals and ambitions…as well as your worries. When you ask your adviser “what classes should I take?” he or she will respond by saying, “Well, what are you interested in?” Remember, you are in school to pursue your educational dreams, not someone else’s! Among my wishes for you in the coming year are: that you make a connection with your classmates and your hall mates and that you personally discover what it means to be part of the Rochester community; that you get to know at least one of your professors very well; that you seek advice from those who are interested in your success; and that you find one or two passions both inside and outside of class that are important to you. Good luck and please let me know if I can be helpful. I know you are going to have a very special year! Marcy Kraus Dean of Freshmen 2

If you accidentally tempt fate, there is a way to avoid catastrophe. You’ll need an acorn, a statue, and good aim: Throw an acorn at the statue of George Eastman in the quad and have it land in the brim of his hat. You are then absolved.
