The document is a chapter on exponents and powers. It discusses exponents as showing how many times a number is multiplied by itself, and defines base and power. It explains exponents of negative numbers, exponents of variables, and laws of exponents. It describes expressing large numbers in standard form as a decimal between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. It provides examples of using laws of exponents to simplify expressions and represents distances between astronomical bodies in exponential form.

11. Expressing Large Numbers in the
Standard form
Any number can be expressed as a decimal
number between 1.0 and 10.0 including 1.0
multiplied by a power of 10. Such a form of a
number is called its standard form.

The distance between Sun and Saturn is
1,433,500,000,000 m = 1.4335 × 1012 m.
The distance between Saturn and Uranus is
1,439,000,000,000 m = 1.439 × 1012 m.
The distance between Sun and Earth is 149,
600,000,000 m = 1.496 × 1011m.
Can you tell which of the three distances is
smallest?
28. Learning outcome
➢ Describe exponential form of numbers in
order to express numbers in exponential
notation.
➢ Apply laws of exponents in order to
simplify a given expression.
➢ Write numbers using powers of 10 in
order to express them in standard form.
➢ Represent large numbers in exponential
form in order to read, understand and
compare them easily.
