The Citizenship Amendment Bill aims to grant citizenship to migrants of six religions (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, Christian) from three countries - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. It reduces the requirement of residence in India for citizenship by naturalization from 11 years to 5 years. The bill also amends cancellation policies for Overseas Citizen of India cardholders if they violate laws or face imprisonment. It exempts tribal areas of four Northeastern states - Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura as well as areas under the Inner Line Permit system.
