Lily's Place is an infant recovery center in Huntington, West Virginia that cares for drug-exposed newborns suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome. One in thirteen babies born at the local hospital require treatment for NAS. Lily's Place provides these babies with a home-like environment during their 4-6 week recovery process from drug withdrawal. The nonprofit organization also offers support to the families through counseling, education, and hands-on parenting training before the babies are released.

Cultural beliefs and societal views of pregnancy and childbirth have changed over time and continue to influence expectations. Family background also impacts how positive or negative one views pregnancy and motherhood.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Em consonância com os ODS – Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e a Estratégia Global para a Saúde das Mulheres, Crianças e Adolescentes, e aplicando uma abordagem baseada nos direitos humanos, os esforços de cuidados pós-natais devem expandir-se para além da cobertura e da simples sobrevivência, de modo a incluir cuidados de qualidade.
Estas diretrizes visam melhorar a qualidade dos cuidados pós-natais essenciais e de rotina prestados às mulheres e aos recém-nascidos, com o objetivo final de melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar materno e neonatal.
Uma “experiência pós-natal positiva” é um resultado importante para todas as mulheres que dão à luz e para os seus recém-nascidos, estabelecendo as bases para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar a curto e longo prazo. Uma experiência pós-natal positiva é definida como aquela em que as mulheres, pessoas que gestam, os recém-nascidos, os casais, os pais, os cuidadores e as famílias recebem informação consistente, garantia e apoio de profissionais de saúde motivados; e onde um sistema de saúde flexível e com recursos reconheça as necessidades das mulheres e dos bebês e respeite o seu contexto cultural.
Estas diretrizes consolidadas apresentam algumas recomendações novas e já bem fundamentadas sobre cuidados pós-natais de rotina para mulheres e neonatos que recebem cuidados no pós-parto em unidades de saúde ou na comunidade, independentemente dos recursos disponíveis.

- 2. What Is Lily’s Place Lily’s Place is an Infant Recovery Center. They ease drug exposed babies off of the drugs that they have been exposed to while in the womb. Lily’s Place is a nonprofit organization.
- 3. Drug Addicted Babies Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a group of problems that occur in a newborn who was exposed to drugs in the womb. At birth, babies are still dependent on the drug. Because the baby is no longer getting the drug after they are born, symptoms of withdrawal can occur. Symptoms often begin within 1 to 3 days, but may take up to a week to appear.
- 4. Cabell Huntington Hospital 1 out of every 13 babies born at Cabell Huntington Hospital is addicted to drugs. Drug addicted newborns crowd the NICU and nurseries. Babies with symptoms of drug addiction can remain in those facilities for up to a week.
- 5. Who Cares Doctors, nurses and the community cares. Lily’s place was opened because people saw the need for proper care for these babies and support for their families. For Lily’s Place to operate, there has to be a lot of caring and passionate people. The building that Lily’s Place uses was donated. People from the community donated their time and money for 2 years to see this project through
- 6. Lily’s Place Recovery Once symptoms of withdrawal are noticed in a newborn, he or she is then scored for a variety of behaviors and responses. Once diagnosed with NAS, care and treatment begins and the withdrawal process typically takes 4-6 weeks Some babies with severe symptoms need medicines such as methadone and morphine to treat withdrawal symptoms. When the baby is off of medicine for 72 hours, the primary caregivers will be invited to stay the night and receive 24-48 hours of hands on training in the care of their baby before going home.
- 7. Inside Lily’s Place Lily’s Place has 16 decorated nurseries. Has a home-like setting.
- 8. Cuddlers Lily’s Place has volunteer cuddlers. Cuddlers cuddle and soothe the baby. Lily’s place wants the babies to feel as comfortable as they possibly can. Cuddlers have to have training, background checks and drugs test just as if they were employed there.
- 9. Fixing The Problem Lily’s Place provides counseling and support to the families of these addicted babies. Lily’s Place wants to educate the mothers of the things that they should be aware of while being pregnant and using drugs. Lily’s Place makes sure that the family that these babies are released to know how to take care of them, and are confident in doing so.

The Staff Lily’s Place is led by a business manager and clinical coordinator who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility and a licensed physician Medical Director overseeing the appropriate clinical care for the NAS babies. Lily’s Place employs a dedicated staff of nurses with specialized training in the therapeutic care of NAS babies and specially trained patient care assistants. Lily’s Place also has volunteers that come help out in anyway that the facility needs.
- 11. Donations Donations can be made at 1320 Seventh Avenue Huntington WV using their bright yellow donation bin. Monetary donations can be made by Paypal on the home page of Lily’s Place web site or by check or money order and mailed to Lily's Place, PO Box 2, Huntington, WV 25706. Size 1 diapers, baby lotion, pacifiers, and paper towels are some examples of things that can be donated to Lily’s Place.
