Richard Bennett, UTC: Deploying Energy Efficiency - The Business PerspectiveAlliance To Save Energy
Rick Bennett discusses United Technologies Corporation's goals and strategies around environment, health, and safety. UTC is a $55 billion company with seven business units. Over time, UTC has expanded its EH&S goals from basic compliance to focusing on reducing impacts across its entire value chain by 2020. Data shows that as revenues have increased, UTC has reduced its water consumption, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve further reductions, UTC audits existing sites, maximizes efficiency of old and new systems, leverages cogeneration, and builds green buildings. In 2007-2008 alone, UTC identified over $170 million in efficiency projects focused on areas like lighting, compressed air, leak management, and cogeneration systems.

Germany produces energy from several sources including coal, nuclear, natural gas, and renewable resources like wind, hydroelectric, solar, and biomass. Coal produces around 49% of Germany's electricity but emits harmful gases. Nuclear produces 30% but has risks of radiation. Natural gas produces 8% and also emits gases, though less than coal. Renewables currently produce around 10% of Germany's electricity, with a goal of powering the country completely with renewables, though developing the necessary technologies poses challenges. The industries, transportation, commerce, and households in Germany each consume significant amounts of electricity annually, totaling around 1907 PJ.

This document analyzes energy efficiency in high-rise buildings using artificial neural networks. It monitors energy consumption in two office buildings to identify systems with highest usage. An artificial neural network model is developed and compared to regression methods for predicting electricity consumption. The neural network approach provides a more accurate consumption forecast and identifies potential cost savings of over $55,000 and $147,000 respectively for the two buildings from improving energy efficiency. Guidelines are established for reducing energy usage and costs in commercial buildings.
The document discusses using cloud-based solutions to improve energy efficiency. It provides two examples: a business in Stockholm reduced its energy use by 25% in the first week after implementing a cloud solution to measure energy usage. A second building saw a 15% increase in its energy usage after moving locations. The document advocates connecting more buildings and facilities to the internet and cloud solutions to enable remote monitoring and control of energy usage, allow demand response adjustments, and reduce waste from unnecessary activities like emptying septic tanks. Overall it promotes cloud-based energy management and data collection as ways to lower energy consumption and costs across all types of buildings.

In this presentation Willie O'Connell will examine how Finland’s Centre for Science (CSC) has implemented a modular data centre solution, to support high performance compute for the Finnish University and Research Network (FUNET), while achieving an annualised power usage effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.1. In addition he will outline how CSC has used data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) to micromanage the facilities ensuring reliability while maximising asset utilisation and return on investment.
This document describes a modular data center located in Iceland that uses natural free cooling technology to achieve an extremely low PUE of 1.069. The data center consists of 18 IT containers with 280 racks total and 4MW of IT power. It uses a natural free cooling system called MNFC that allows cooling without moving parts or energy usage by transferring heat through a cold corridor. This takes advantage of Iceland's climate where temperatures rarely exceed 24°C to eliminate the need for traditional cooling for most of the year. The modular design allows for scalability and the geothermal power sources allow for ultra-low costs and carbon neutrality compared to continental Europe.

Telecom Italia is one of the largest energy consumers in Italy due to its extensive telecommunications network. The company consumed over 2,000 GWh of electricity in 2008, equivalent to the annual output of a nuclear power plant. While energy efficiency efforts over the past decade led to a 20% reduction in consumption, rising energy costs increased operating expenses. Further actions are needed to reduce the energy burden on both networks and customers. Standardization will be key to promoting energy-efficient technologies and achieving coordination across different sectors and regions.

ICT4S - Green cloud? the current and future development of energy consumption...SURFsara
This document discusses the energy consumption of information and communication technologies (ICT), including data centers, networks, and end-user devices. It finds that while cloud computing makes end-user devices more efficient, the growth of data centers and networks means total global IT energy consumption will continue increasing between 2010 and 2025. Specifically, energy use by networks and data centers is projected to rise significantly as cloud computing expands extremely rapidly. Though end-user devices are becoming more efficient, their total numbers are still growing. As a result, the increases in data center and network infrastructure energy use outweigh the savings from efficient end-user devices, leading to an overall projected growth in IT energy consumption globally due to cloud computing.
