The evening was held to recognise the hard
work and dedication of 2008’s Hair and Beauty
graduates. After completing their studies, the
TAFE students were invited to a wonderful
presentation night to collect their awards,
which ranged from Certificate II right through
to Diploma, in the presence of all their friends
and family.
Head Teacher of Hairdressing and Beauty,
Barbara Fallone, was Master of Ceremonies and
other TAFE teachers, hair and beauty industry
figures and sponsors contributed to the event
either by providing gifts and/or presenting
awards.
Guest were kept entertained, with international
students putting on a spectacular catwalk
hair show featuring four great dancers from
Blacktown’s Diva Snap dance studio. The
students created a Japanese-styled “Harajuku”
theme, spending many hours co-ordinating
music, costumes, Power Point presentations
and finding models to take part. All this was
done with the help of their hairdressing
teachers. Maria Mrljak was head co-ordinator
and supervised the theme of the show and its
Power Point presentations while her colleagues
Leanne Connor and Julie Searl helped out by
mentoring students. “We give them some ideas
in the beginning and then allow the students
to express their individual creativity,” Leanne
explains.
The make up was provided by beauty students.
With the assistance of beauty teachers Franca
Semsarian and Anne Mackay, the students used
inspirational images to create fantastic designs
in keeping with the show’s theme.
On the night, the team effort between students
and teachers all came together beautifully and
resulted in a magnificent production.

QACiao talks ‘Art Makeup’
QI am thinking about having cosmetic
tattooing done on my eyebrows
and lips but I’m a bit unsure about it
all. What if I don’t like how it looks?
Apprehensive
ABefore you have any type of
tattooing or body art done you need
to be sure you are prepared to have it
there for life. A tattoo is a form of art
that allows people to display messages
through symbolic designs or marks
made on the body. The type of tattooing
you’re enquiring about is for cosmetic
purposes. Although it will last years, it
will eventually fade. To save yourself
years of anguish though, it’s best to do
some research and keep asking lots of
questions to professional practitioners
in this field until you are satisfied it’s
something you want to do. When done
properly, cosmetic tattooing can save
you time and frustration, ensure you look
good 24/7 and significantly reduce the
amount you need to spend on make-up.
It doesn’t wash off, so you can swim,
sleep, exercise, shower, eat and still
look great. The result and procedure
is basically the same as if you were
getting a normal tattoo where a needle
is used to insert pigment into the skin.
The difference with cosmetic tattooing
is the machines that are used and the
depth of the implanted colour. Tattoo
artists use a coil machine and power
box, which has much more power than
the rotary pen style machine used
by cosmetic tattoo practitioners. The
rotary machine runs a lot quieter, is
lighter, easier to handle and control,
and is designed specifically for cosmetic
tattooing. Also the needle is not inserted
quite as deep into the skin as a body
tattoo. The colour immediately after
the treatment will be stronger, brighter
and possibly darker than your desired
colour but this subsides during the
healing process (approx 4-14 days). A
good practitioner will guide you through
the whole process and as with any skin
penetration treatment, be sure to choose
one that complies with health and
hygiene regulations.
