The Chimes is a Christmas story written by
Charles Dickens and published in 1844. It
is the second of his five Christmas books,
following the famous A Christmas Carol.
The story follows Toby "Trotty" Veck, a poor
man who works as a messenger and feels
that society looks down on him and other
poor people. On New Year's Eve, Trotty has
a magical encounter with the spirits of the
bells, who teach him an important lesson
about the value of all people, rich or poor.
Toby "Trotty" Veck is a poor, elderly man who works as a
ticket-porter, delivering letters. He spends a lot of time
waiting by the church, where the Chimes (bells) encourage
him as he works. However, on New Year's Eve, Trotty feels
sad and hopeless after reading about crimes and problems
among poor people. He starts to believe that poor people,
like himself, are bad by nature.
Plot𖤐⭒๋࣭ ⭑ .ᐟ ᡣ𐭩
His daughter Meg and her fiancé Richard announce their
plan to marry, even though they are poor. But after
meeting Alderman Cute, a rich man who scolds them and
blames them for their own poverty, they feel discouraged
and think they don’t deserve to be happy.
Plot𖤐⭒๋࣭ ⭑ .ᐟ ᡣ𐭩
Trotty delivers a note from Alderman Cute to Sir Joseph
Bowley, who gives charity to the poor in a controlling way.
Bowley scolds Trotty for not paying a small debt to Mrs.
Chickenstalker, a shopkeeper. Feeling worthless, Trotty
meets Will Fern, a poor man, and his orphaned niece,
Lilian. Will is accused of vagrancy, and Trotty warns him
that Cute plans to arrest him. Trotty takes Will and Lilian
home, where they share their small meal with Meg, who
becomes upset and starts doubting her decision to marry
Richard.
Plot𖤐⭒๋࣭ ⭑ .ᐟ ᡣ𐭩
Trotty reads a newspaper late at night and becomes
convinced that the working class is naturally wicked after
learning about a poor woman who killed herself and her
baby. Suddenly, the Chimes interrupt his thoughts, calling
him to the church. In the bell chamber, he sees a group of
dwarf phantoms that disappear when the Chimes stop.
Then, he encounters dark goblin figures representing the
bells. The goblin of the Great Bell scolds Trotty for losing
faith in humanity's ability to improve.
Plot𖤐⭒๋࣭ ⭑ .ᐟ ᡣ𐭩
Later that night, Trotty is magically called to the church
bells, where he meets the spirits of the Chimes. They show
him visions of the future, revealing the tragic
consequences of losing hope. In these visions, Richard
becomes an alcoholic, Meg marries him but is left in
misery, and Will Fern and his niece Lilian suffer greatly.
Lilian eventually dies after a life of hardship, and Meg, in
desperation, considers ending her own life and her
child’s.
Plot𖤐⭒๋࣭ ⭑ .ᐟ ᡣ𐭩
Meg and Richard go ahead with their wedding, and friends
come to celebrate. The story ends with a positive message
about the power of hope and kindness, reminding people to
treat the poor with respect and compassion.
