An industrial rubber manufacturer was experiencing 20% rejection rates in its calendering process due to thickness variation in the rubber sheets; analyzing multivariable charts revealed that thickness dropped when input rubber rolls neared completion, so switching to smaller 1kg rolls with improved insulation between processing reduced thickness variation and rejections to under 2% within 4 days.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Here is a case study.
One Industrial Rubber Parts Manufacturer
had a problem in his calendering process.
The critical process in the business
was calendering,
in which rubber mix was passed
between 2 rollers
to get sheets of desired thicknesses.
The sheets were later vulcanised.
3. Page 3www.sigmaguru.com
Background
Current Situation & Target
The process produced 20 %
Rejection. Rejected material was
recycled.
This caused further damage in
terms of deteriorated batches.
•Target = 0 %
1. This was stated to be a Chronic problem
2. The calendering machine was very old awaiting
replacement. There was delay in ordering new
machine due to cash flow problems.
3. They knew the problem and were Living with it.
4. There was apparently no known solution to the
problem except machine replacement.

Look at this multivari very closely
As input roll is getting finished, thickness drops to a low value
Once a new roll is fed, thickness goes up quickly
see this happening 3 times
40 kg batch requires 4 rolls of 10kg as input
You miss this clue….. And you lose a possible solution.
