in their living room. Some have a
real tree, but today many people
have an artificial tree. People put up
their trees a few days before
Christmas and decorate them with

people in the United
States. Even though its
origins are Christian, it
has become a holiday
season that is
celebrated in various
ways by people of
many faiths.
People say Merry Christmas or Happy

often shortened to Xmas. People give

GREECE
The Greek traditional boat is a
very old tradition. It used to be a
kind of honor and welcome to
sailors returning from their
voyages.
The Christmas boat symbolizes
the new voyage of man in life,
after the birth of Christ.
50 years ago, until the first
post-war decade, we met the boat
in many Greek houses and in the
hands of children who sang carols.
Christmas carols are sung mainly by
children, either individually or in
groups. They enter houses, shops or
public places, accompanied by the
traditional iron triangle or other
musical instruments such as
accordion, drum, harmonica etc. The
children give wishes and get pocket
money for charities or to buy toys.
More than thirty
variations have been
counted in the Christmas
carols in Greece!
