It definitely blows my mind. I grew up in Pensacola where the Blue Angels practice and it was awesome
watching that. Here's a quote from an interview with the pilot: Well, according to Tickle, it takes a lot of
practice. The Blue Angels pilot explained that the airshows begin with a large cargo plane flown by three
pilots at once, and then move on to the six F-18 jets that fly with tight precision in various formations.
“We spend about four months, what we call winter training, perfecting these maneuvers,” Tickle says.
“Initially, we’ll start crawling. We’ll go up and we’ll practice formations, we’ll practice maneuvers, and
we’re very far apart.” He adds that the Blue Angels pilots begin to move closer as they become more and
more proficient, eventually moving as close as they are in the airshows. For Tickle, the real thrill is being
able to give back to his country.
