Today’s healthcare consumer has greater
access to information than at any other
point in history.
This knowledge base
has developed a
greater appreciation
for natural,
conservative
methods as viable
alternatives for
many human
ailments.
Evidence today suggests that “watchful
waiting” as a preliminary management
plan may avoid unnecessary treatments
such as back surgery.
By approaching each patient with a
holistic concept of healthcare,
issues such as back pain,
headache, and extremity pain are
successfully managed and, when
necessary, co-managed by
Doctors of Chiropractic.
Chiropractors, also known as Doctors
of Chiropractic or chiropractic
physicians, diagnose and treat
patients whose health problems are
associated with the body’s muscular,
nervous, and skeletal systems,
especially the spine.
Chiropractors believe interference with
these systems impairs normal functions
and lowers resistance to disease.
They also hold that skeletal
imbalance through joint or
articular dysfunction, especially
in the spine, can cause pain.
Chiropractic strategies of health
management seek to help the
individual cope by helping to
relieve structural stress and
providing information on
alternative options.
Chiropractic health care primarily focuses
on examining and evaluating the spine
and pelvis to determine if any one area of
the spine is malfunctioning or if many
areas of the spine are causing abnormal
body movements.
If present these malfunctioning areas may
contribute to stresses that influence the
nervous system and compromise its ability
to adapt and function.
Chiropractors teach that health is not a
commodity which can be purchased in
a tablet or bottle; it can only be
obtained and maintained by allowing
the natural recuperative powers of the
body to function unimpaired.
Adequate nutrition, water, rest, clean air,
exercise, a positive attitude and a properly
functioning nervous system are critical
requirements for maintenance of good
health.
Many people find that regular
chiropractic care, as part of a
total health care program,
enables them to function and
perform to a higher potential.
When necessary, your
Doctor of Chiropractic
will provide
recommendations for
consultation with other
health care practitioners
to obtain secondary
treatment or the proper
counsel you may require.
The examination of your spine,
nerve, and muscle systems to
evaluate structure and
function is what makes the
chiropractic approach
different from that of other
health care practitioners.
During the initial visit,
chiropractors follow a standard
routine to secure the information
needed for diagnosis and
treatment. They take the patient’s
history and conduct a physical
exam that consists of neurologic
and orthopedic testing as well as
postural analysis.
During the examination, your
spine and/or extremities may be
moved through various positions
to determine normal or abnormal
ranges of motion. This information
will help your Doctor of
Chiropractic determine areas of
structural dysfunction.
Chiropractors may even order
diagnostic imaging and/or
physiologic laboratory tests
that can help confirm a
diagnosis.
If chiropractic treatment is
considered appropriate, a
treatment plan will be
developed.
The primary treatment by
your Doctor of
Chiropractic, in most
cases will be specific
vertebral adjustments or
manipulations.
The adjustment is usually given by
hand.
It consists of placing the patient on a
precisely designed adjusting table or
other special equipment and then
applying specific pressure by hand,
using precise and skilled chiropractic
techniques, to the areas of the spine
that are out of proper alignment or
that do not move properly within their
normal range of motion.
There are also other methods used by
Doctors of Chiropractic to perform
spinal manipulations.

Special tables which provide
continuous passive motion, as well as
flexion-distraction, have been
developed. Instrument adjusting has
also been widely used by Doctors of
Chiropractic to perform spinal
adjustments with the ability to
manually control force.
Once these spinal areas have been
adjusted or manipulated to restore
normal movement, the resulting
change should have a positive
influence on your area of complaint
or discomfort.
