The Antarctic desert, located in Antarctica, has an annual precipitation of only 200 mm and temperatures as low as -89°C. It is covered by ice 98% of the time. Though the climate does not allow for extensive vegetation, there are some mosses, liverworts, and two flowering plant species that can survive the cold temperatures and winds by growing close to the ground with small leaves. Animals that live there include penguins, skua, mites, springtails, and worms.
The document provides an overview of the history of exploration and scientific research in Antarctica. It details some of the earliest expeditions to the continent in the 18th and 19th centuries by Cook, Ross, and others seeking territory and a southern continent. In the early 20th century, expeditions by Scott, Shackleton, and Amundsen vied to be the first to reach the South Pole. The document also describes Shackleton's harrowing journey and survival after his ship Endurance was crushed in the ice. It provides brief descriptions of the Antarctic wildlife, stations, and scenic areas on the frozen continent.
Facts, environment, tourism, resource and the treaty, all about Antarctica. A comprehensive description of the environmental component of the white continent. Can be taught from Year 9 to Year 13, in Geography, Social Studies, Global Perspectives or Environmental Science. Subject taught in Geography Year 9 at Pukekohe Christian School by the geography teacher Mr. Dumitrache. PCS is a Cambridge school from Auckland, New Zealand. Please send me a message if you want to download this Power Point presentation for educational purposes.
Hot deserts are located between 30 degrees north and south and have average daytime highs of 38 degrees with nighttime lows of 7 degrees and receive less than 25cm of annual rainfall. Plants have thick stems and deep roots to store water while animals have thick skin or burrow underground to preserve water. Cold deserts receive less than 25cm of annual rainfall and have summer highs between 21-26 degrees and winter lows of -2 to 4 degrees. Plants and animals similarly adapt to the dry, cold conditions by having short statures and burrowing or extending roots underground. The soils in both deserts are salty due to a lack of water washing away minerals.
This document describes the major biomes of the world, including the Arctic tundra, coniferous forest, deciduous forest, desert, grassland, marine, savanna, and tropical rainforest biomes. For each biome, it provides examples of characteristic plant and animal species and describes environmental conditions. Additional resources on biomes are also listed.
This document provides information about Antarctica, including its geography, climate, people, and ice. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and driest place on Earth, located at the South Pole and covered in permafrost. It has an average temperature of -128.6°F and receives less than 2 inches of snowfall per year on average. While there are no permanent human residents, about 4,000 people visit seasonally for scientific expeditions. The ice in Antarctica can be up to 15,000 feet thick, equaling approximately 3 miles.
i. A biome is a geographic area characterized by specific kinds of plants and animals, with deserts being one type of biome.
ii. Deserts have hot climates with less than 25 cm of annual precipitation and daily temperature extremes.
iii. Many desert plants and animals have adapted to their environment through mechanisms like storing water and nocturnal behavior.
This document is the catalog for IKEA products from 2012. It highlights several new lower priced items available that year, including a queen memory foam mattress, MALM bed frame, BILLY bookcase, and KARISBED spread and cushion covers.
