Children’s Literature: From Fairy Tales to Harry
Potter is a literary survey course of some of the best
loved and most influential children’s works from
around the world. We will study texts designed or
published for children over the last five-hundred
years, including detailed examinations of well-known
fairy tales like Cinderella and Red Riding Hood and
their many modern adaptations. The course will also
cover picture books by such popular authors and
illustrators as Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein. Alongside
these popular writers, we will analyze children’s books
like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, Anne of
Green Gables, and more. We will explore topics in
children’s literature dealing with politics, philosophy,
history, psychology, and education, but most
importantly we explore the value and significance of
story within the child’s world and ours.
