Well you’ve come to the right place.Expect the Average. Get Far More
To The Reader, From the Editor
Hello reader to the second issue of ChickenBallSoup. This week we bring you a fair amount of new reviews and insights, and we have cut the intro to the staff section because, well, everyone should know the staff by now and no introductions should be needed. However I do hope to convince the staff to agree to a staff comments section where they can simply comment on their progress for the week. It’ll fill up space at least. Either way, in more relevant news just about all our writers have decided to review a film of some sort this week, so make sure to pay attention and look out for something you might be interested in seeing. Warning: There are spoilers throughout. This has been your editor, enjoy. – Artem Naida Head Editor/Writer
-314325257175
Emmett Levin
Writer
06/05/10
Kick-Ass
“Kick-Ass” is a movie about a regular guy who wishes above all to be a hero. If you look at almost any super hero movie the hero has some kind of super power or something special about them that makes them “super”. For example, superman has super strength, super speed, laser vision, he can fly, and all sorts of awesome tricks. Yet, Kick-Ass has none of these powers, or even any unique qualities. Kick-Ass becomes a celebrity and soon gets a personal request from a friend who he happens to find very attractive. He goes to tell a guy that his friend doesn’t want him around anymore and soon find himself in a difficult situation considering he’s outnumbered and out-gunned. Luckily 2 other heroes, a father and daughter (who actually do have talent with weapons and lots of weapons to use), come to the rescue and become allies with Kick-Ass. The plot thickens as we find out the motivation for the other 2 hero’s fighting which turns out not to be as noble as their new friend. They are fighting because the wife/mother of the 2 heroes was killed by a mobster who wants Kick Ass dead. A fourth hero is introduced named Red Mist who is the son of the mobster has decided to help his dad capture Kick-Ass and the other heroes so his father can take his revenge on them. Fortunately, the daughter Hit-Girl is not captured and comes to the rescue but is unable to save her father. In the end Kick-Ass is faced with a decision which I will not share in order to protect the ending and not ruin the movie completely. The movie was fun to watch because of the occasional joke and a lot of action. The thing I find many if not most action movies lack is plot and Kick-Ass was an exception to my rule. Its plot was easy to follow and still interesting although I wish that they wouldn’t have given away so much and left some of the movie up to the viewer to predict. They hid absolutely nothing. The movie was extremely predictable which in most cases makes a movie boring but even though I was able to anticipate most of the movie the frequent fight scenes made the movie more interesting to watch. The bottom line: Kick-Ass was an action packed movie with some pretty impressive fight scenes that were fun to watch. I would recommend this movie to any teen and if not for some brief nudity I would recommend it to children 5+.
-2857514605Genie Gokhman
Writer
06/05/10
Maid in Manhattan
Maid in Manhattan: probably one of the best known chick-flick classics. Yes, a warning to the guys, it is in fact a CHICK FLICK. I was lucky enough to catch it when it was on TV. It is definitely worthy of its popularity, for it is in fact one of the cutest and sweetest movies I’ve ever seen. The story is pretty much about this maid (who is quite pretty) that works in Manhattan (no way, right?). She accidentally meets this rich, famous guy; and they start to like each other. Surprisingly it’s not true love at first sight. I actually really liked that fact, because it makes the story seem so realistic and believable. Other movies have plots that are only for little girls’ dreams. In the end the maid has to decide between taking a manager position at her job, and this new guy, who doesn’t even know who she really is. I’m not going to spoil the ending, but I can definitely promise you that you will not want to look away from this movie until the very end. Oh and by the way, the maid has a son which is super smart and is absolutely adorable. This movie will keep you smiling and laughing the whole time, and though it is mainly for girls (of all ages, in my opinion) and I think that some guys can benefit from watching it as well. Anyways, if you haven’t seen this movie already, then WATCH IT! And if you have, then WATCH IT AGAIN!
This has been Genie Gokhman with another Review. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading my article half as much as I enjoyed writing it.
-171450-27305Artem Naida
Head Editor/Writer
07/05/10
Forrest Gump
The first thing I have to say is that if this movie does not touch your heart after you see it, you have no soul. I’m not being judgemental here; I have nothing against people with no soul, just stating a direct correlation between the affect of the movie on the mind and the presence of a soul in said mind.
To clear things up, I have watched this movie twice in my life. The first time was when I was perhaps 10 years old. I didn’t pay excessive amounts of attention to the film the first time I saw it, so I didn’t really remember much. Yet for some reason I decided to watch the movie again, perhaps just to remember what it was about. That had to be one of the best decisions of my life. Although the movie has its fair share of uncomfortable parts, they are all very necessary to flesh out character and plot. To be blunt there was more than one time that I was just not comfortable watching a scene.
I refuse to spoil the movie in any other way, and potentially turn off viewers, because I cannot recommend this movie enough and my writing skills would never do it justice. Just so you know, it has to be the best movie I have seen. Perhaps that’s because I haven’t seen a lot of good movies, or perhaps not. Decide for yourself.
-85725307340
Paul Cho
06/05/10
Writer
Film of the Year
Recently, on March 7th, the 82nd Oscar Academy Awards were held at Hollywood. Some have awaited this event for the hot celebrities and red carpet; some have been waiting for the humorous emceeing of the hosts, and some for those emotional, teary speeches by famous celebrities. But most of all, the main reason for someone to see this event is to watch the actual awards being presented to the deserving movies, directors, actors/actresses, etc. What is the best part in my opinion? Watching which movie wins the film of the year award. Despite this year’s heavy predictions about the film Avatar, the #1 all-time Box Office movie, winning perhaps the most honourable award in film industry, an unexpected, not so popular movie called “The Hurt Locker” stole its opportunity to stand on the top spot.
So, what is the Hurt Locker, and what is so amazing about it that it could steal Avatar’s expected win, a movie which sales hit over 2 BILLION dollars? Hurt Locker is a recent dramatization of the Iraq War, a story that shows the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad. They challenge their odds of living, to defuse and destroy terrorist bombs in one of the most dangerous places on earth.
It’s not only all the action that gets you glued to the seat, but also the personal stories and points of views from the officers in Iraq. It makes you think a bit from the bomb diffuser’s point of view. All the tensions and adrenaline you get from watching Sergeant James (the main character) defusing all the bombs is indescribable. It leads to your own stomach turning into a complex bomb, getting defused and then armed again from all the danger and sudden relief. In my opinion, this film is better than any documentation I've seen dealing with the Iraq war. It feels so real and scary, almost as if your life was on the front line of bomb defusing. It’s well-shot, well-directed, well-written, and well-acted. I think it’s 100% worth your view, and also the Oscar.
