5TH CHAPTER
WATER TECHNOLOGY
By
G.Venkata Ramana
INTRODUCTION
Water is nature's most wonderful, abundant and useful compound. It
is essential to all forms of life.
Water is not only essential for the animals and plants, but also
occupies a unique position in industries.
No Industry can be established or run without adequate supply of
water.
The most important use of water in the industries is in the steam
generation.
.
SOURCES OF WATER
The following are the important sources of water.
1. SURFACE WATER
1.Rain Water: It is the purest form of water.
2. River Water: Rivers are fed by rain and spring
waters. This water contains considerable amount of
dissolved as well as suspended impurities.
3. Lake Water: It has a constant chemical
composition and contains large amounts of
organic matter.
4. Sea Water: It is the most impure form of
water and its use is very limited.
GROUND WATER
It occurs in the form of spring water and
well water. It contains most of the
dissolved salts. Hence it has more
hardness.
Types of Impurities Present in Water
1. Suspended Impurities
2. Dissolved Impurities
3. Dissolved Mineral Salts
4. Microscopic Matter
1. Suspended Impurities:
The insoluble substances like sand, clay
particles are present as suspended
impurities. These impurities cause
turbidity to water.
2. Dissolved Gases:
The gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide,
hydrogen sulphide etc. are dissolved in
water. Water may also contains some
undesirable gases and odours due to the
decay of organic matter.
3. Dissolved Mineral Salts: Dissolved
mineral salts are mainly the carbonates,
bicarbonates, chlorides, sulphates, nitrates,
fluorides of sodium, potassium, magnesium,
calcium, iron, manganese, etc. They cause
hardness and alkalinity to the water.
4. Microscopic Matter: It mainly consists of
bacteria and other micro organisms like algae,
fungi etc. This causes harmful diseases.
SOFT WATER AND HARD WATER
The water is classified into 2 types based on its
action with soap.
These are:1. Soft water
2. Hard water
1. Soft Water: The water which produces lather easily
with soap is called soft water.
Soap is a sodium or potassium salt of fatty acids like
stearic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid. Whenever, soap
is added to soft water, it ionises into anion of fattyacid
and Na*. This anion involves in the cleaning action. So
lather forms easily.
2. Hard Water: The water which
does not produce lather easily with
soap is called hard water.
HARDNESS OF WATER The lather
preventing property of water with soap is called
hardness. The hardness of water is due to the
presence of dissolved salts like bicarbonates,
chlorides and sulphates of calcium and
magnesium. When soap is treated with hard
water, it forms insoluble calcium or magnesium
salt of fatty acid. It is precipitated as a white
curdy substance.
Soap does not produce lather until all the Ca +2 and Mg+2 ions have
been precipitated. Hence, the salts should be removed from the hard
water before its use.
1. Temporary Hardness (or) Carbonate
Hardness: The hardness causes due to
the presence of dissolved bicarbonates
of calcium and magnesium is called
temporary hardness.
The formula of these compounds
is Ca (HCO3)2, Mg (HCO3)2.
2. Permanent Hardness (or) Non-carbonate
Hardness:
The hardness causes due to the presence of
chlorides and sulphates of calcium and
magnesium is called Permanent Hardness.
The formula of these compounds are CaCl2,
MgCl2, CaSO4, MgSO4.
Permanent hardness can't be removed by
boiling.
LIST OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS CAUSING HARDNESS
DISADVANTAGES OF USING HARD WATER IN INDUSTRIES
Hard water is not suitable for domestic and industrial use.
Following are the disadvantages of using hard water
1. Laundry: Hard water, when used for washing purpose, does not
produce lather easily. This causes the wastage of soap and
clothes do not become quite clean.
2. Textile Industry: When hard water is used in textile industry,
precipitates of calcium and magnesium soaps adhere to the fabrics
and prevent the formation of exact shades of colours in dyeing
3. Paper Industry: If hard water is used in paper industry, it spoils
the quality of paper.
4. Sugar Industry: If hard water is used in sugar refining, causes
difficulty in the crystallisation of sugar. Further, the sugar so
produced may be deli-quiscent.
5. Boilers: For steam generation, in industries, boilers are invariably
employed. If the hard water is used in the boilers, the disadvantages
which arise are:(a) Wastage of fuel.(b) Scale and sludge formation.
