Periodontal disease is an infectious disease that involves inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth. Nearly 75% of American adults have some form of periodontal disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss. Periodontal disease ranges from gingivitis, which is a reversible inflammation of the gums, to periodontitis, a more serious condition involving the destruction of bone and tissues that support the teeth. The major causes of periodontal disease are dental plaque and calculus. Left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.
