Chapter Summaries Of Foreshadowing Of A Yellow Spotted...
Chapter 1: Page 4: "You don't want to be bitten by a yellow spotted lizard, that's the worst thing that
can happen to you. You will die a slow and painful death." Insights: This is an example of
foreshadowing. I can assume that this statement will have an important factor to contribute in this
story. Chapter 2: Page 5: "The judge said '"You may go to jail, or you may go to Camp Green
Lake."' Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before. Insights: Of course
Stanley would choose to go to a camp. It states in this quote that he had come from a house of little
income. Therefore, he had never been to a camp, so he chose the camp. He thought that it wouldn't
be that bad. Chapter 3: Page 7: "It was a family joke. Whenever anything went wrong, they always
blamed Stanley's no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather." Insights: In this
chapter its focusing a lot on this grandfather of his. If the grandfather had no meaning in the story,
then why would they give information on a meaningless topic? They wouldn't, are they somehow
stimulating that the grandfather is the cause of all this bad luck? Chapter 4: Page 13"The cap had a
piece of cloth sewn on the back of it, for neck protection." Insights: Why would Stanley need a cap
like that for camp? This is a piece of information that helps readers figure out what kind of
environment Stanley must be in, and what challenges he may face. So we can assume that he is in a
sunny facility and he will be

Growing up
Holes
"It was all because of his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather!"
(Sachar,7). Stanley had thought and blamed his grandfather for everything especially in the book
Holes by Louis Sachar. The theme is growing up because in the story Stanley loses his innocence,
shows responsibility for others and himself, and shows learning by his and others mistake. In the
story Stanley shows responsibility by carrying Zero up God's thumb and authority for his actions.
Zero hadn't had food for days beside the "spoolsh" which was making his stomach
crumple.Likewise, if stanley wouldn't have started teaching Zero to read and write or told the other
boys that he was teaching Zero, then the boys wouldn't have ratted out Stanley. Mr.pendanski then
wouldn't have told the warden and Mr.Sir about the lesson Stanley was giving Zero, Zero then
wouldn't have never ran away. "Stanley took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him up right... He
stood up, lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground."(Sachar,170).My quote proves Stanley has
responsibility by when he says that he was teaching Zero to read and write when he knew he was
going to get in trouble in the end. Also when he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stanley shows learning when he finds out that the yellow spotted lizards are poisonous and if you
were to directly look them in the eyes they will bite you. Furthermore Stanley learns that the first
hole he dug wasn't the hardest but the ones to follow were. The sun doesn't help with the boy's
situations either because they are out there from sunrise until they were finished with their holes.
The boys have very little water and were wearing pants and long sleeve shirts. "Using his shovel for
support, he managed to get to his feet!"(Sachar,36).This proves Stanley's learning by how he gets
blisters and cuts from the shovel on the first hole. He keeps learning everyday because the
challenges keep getting worse from there on

The Social Security Blanket: Full of Holes? Essay
Recent budget controversy in Congress and the media has once again brought to the fore the
pressing desire for fiscal responsibility in the United States Government. Although Congress came
to a compromise in the proverbial eleventh hour, the extra attention afforded to the budget issue
reignited a lingering controversy: is the current system of transfer payment, or "welfare," programs a
financially viable one, or should these programs be recognized as an economic burden? To answer
that, it is necessary to identify which programs demand the largest portion of funding; this
distinction is awarded to the Social Security program, the funding for which is considered
"mandatory" and constituted about 56% of the budget for 2011 (Office of ... Show more content on

Many of its difficulties could be said to stem from its "pay–as–you–go" funding plan. Social
Security withholdings are not put away for the future needs of the person from whom they are
withheld, but are instead transferred to an existing claimant. The pay–as–you–go system means that
current recipients are paid for out of current revenues. In good years, these revenues have
outnumbered the claims laid to them, but it is clear that that period is coming to an end. The Baby
Boomers – a massive population segment who, in their youth, contributed greatly to Social Security
revenues – are now coming into their own as retirees, and will no longer provide the revenue that
they did in their working years. Instead, they will be expecting at least a partial return for their years
of labor and withheld income, in the form of retirement benefits. The program which will provide
those benefits, OASDI, is one of the most costly under the banner of Social Security; its
expenditures were propped up by the very generation that now seeks to claim from it. This will have
a startling effect on the funding for Social Security. Indeed, the Baby Boomer generation may have
been one of the reasons Social Security looked successful at all: because

John Frank Monologue
I have a grudge against my neighbor named John, and John has pushed the last of my buttons. Ive
decided to take revenge on him for the years of torment that's made my life completely and utterly
miserable. I am going to take his life and ill finally be free of the nightmare i know to be John.To do
this it will take careful planning on my part and I'll need a place to hide if im found out by the towns
people. I'll also need a place to hide the body and any evidence so people won't become suspicious
of my involvement of his sudden disappearance.
The main problem that I have with John is that he blames me for everything bad or catastrophic that
has happened to the towns folk and the surrounding area. He has blamed me for theft, murder,
poisoning the water supply, the withering of an entire field of corn, the disappearance of livestock,
and much much more. Not only does John hurt my reputation with the rest of the town but he has

I will monitor his daily schedule for a month and a half to figure out when and where he goes every

a rock slide if I'm questioned about where he has gone. I will use a jungle spike trap to catch him.
He will step in the rather large hole on the way to the next tree he needs to fall. It will shred his foot
because of the sharp wooden spikes which will also splinter apart in his foot. The hole itself will be
about a foot and a half deep and two feet wide. Because of the size of the hole it will also cause him

Holes Stanley Character Analysis
Stanley from Holes is under a curse so now he haves to attend a camp for bad boys. According to
Mr.Sir Camp Green Lake helps kids build character and building character makes you mature.
Stanley changes from timid to mature because of how Sachar describes him in the beginning he is
treated like a nobody, in the middle he turns into a caring kid, and in the end he is a trustful and
worthy kid. Camp Green Lake is a dried up wasteland for bad boys. Stanley gets accused for
stealing shoes, when he really didn´t. Now Stanley´s stuck in camp. In the beginning of the book

In the story Holes, Stanley is framed as a juvenile delinquent who is found guilty of stealing the
famous Clyde Livingston's shoes. He is sent to Camp Green Lake for 18 months to serve his
punishment. At Camp Green Lake, it is a detention center for juvenile delinquents who have
committed a crime. The Warden runs the Camp. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of a desert in
Texas. It used to be a city called Green Lake Town, and Green Lake, where Camp Green Lake is on.
The town dried up over time, and now all that is left is a dry desert. At Camp Green Lake, you must
dig holes at the dry, dusty, and hard lake beds of Green Lake. Each hole must be 5 by 5 feet. Stanley

the air, which gets them to stop. The Warden comes to sort things out. When the Warden finds out
Stanley wasn't digging his hole, she is furious and tells Stanley that he must dig his hole. Zero grabs
a shovel and slams it into Mr. Pendanski's face, causing him to go out cold. Zero runs away into the
desert. A few days later, Stanley is worried about Zero. When Mr. Sir was giving the campers a
water refill with the water truck, Stanley hijacks the truck and drives it away to search for Zero.
Unfortunately, Stanley drives into a hole, causing the whole truck to be stuck. Stanley runs away
from Camp Green Lake in search of Zero. Stanley finds Zero and they go to "Big Thumb". When
they arrive, they found the place had water and onions, which means they won't starve or die of

Essay about Internet Terrorism
Internet Security Holes and Cyberterrorism
Abstract: This paper investigates and substantiates the potential for hackers to cause damage in the
physical world. A fictional case study is provided along with an analysis of past, present, and future
technological threats. The combination of a historic apathy towards computer security and an
increased reliance on technology may soon lead to a real–world "cybercatastrophe".
I first learned about computer hacking from an article featured in the New York Times magazine
several years ago. It described the life of members of a hacking group known as L0pht. They were
neither benign nor malicious; they would simply look for holes in software products and post the
results on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the anniversary of the release of Windows 2004, a terrorist hacking group known as Horizon
launched a full–scale assault on the city of Seattle. At exactly 6:30 P.M., the height of rush hour,
chaos was unleashed on the city. In many instances, disaster could not be avoided simply because no
physical system was in place to alleviate computer malfunction. Horizon successfully altered the
destinations of several trains, causing them to collide, killing hundreds in the process. Brake systems
on new–model cars were triggered, causing multi–car accidents on major highways. Automated
devices in hospitals ceased working altogether, leaving many patients without critical life support.
As a final touch, Horizon diverted several airplanes to the corporate headquarters of Microsoft in
nearby Redmond, Washington, burning the complex to the ground with a multitude of personnel still
inside. Rescue efforts were initiated immediately, but the severity of the attacks left the dead
numbering in the thousands.
Over the course of the next few weeks, Microsoft employees were able to recreate the crime and
track down the flaw. In the meantime, fears of a second attack crippled life across America. Public

Holes Stanley Character Analysis
Stanley, The Friendly Character
In the book called Holes, there is a very friendly character. His name is Stanley. He portrays
kindness, generosity, and he is warm hearted. He shows this kind of character throughout the book.
The first character trait Stanley shows is that he shows is kindness. He shows this by giving
something he found in the hole he dug to X–Ray. "I think I might have found something." said
Stanley. "Instead of showing it to Zig–Zag, he gave the tube to X–Ray." Stanley was being kind and
letting X–Ray have the day off for "finding" what Stanley found. This was very kind because
digging the holes in Camp Green Lake on very harsh in conditions was not easy at all. It was a very
big deal to get the day off and he gave

Vulnerabilities Are Known As Security Holes That Exist
Vulnerabilities– Vulnerabilities are known as security holes that exist in software, buffer flow is one
example which happens when the developer of a software product expects a certain amount of data,
for example 20 bytes of information, to be sent at a particular point in the operation of an agenda,
but fails to allow for an error circumstances where the user (or malicious attacker) sends a great deal
more data, or unexpected (perhaps special) characters. Vulnerabilities occurs in software running on
PC's, servers, communications equipment such as routers, or almost any device running software.
Not all vulnerabilities are created equal– some will cause the program affected to crash (which can
lead to a denial of service condition on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These viruses contain their own e–mail server, so that they can replicate by sending email to all mail
addresses that they harvest from the system. Worms– An example of a worm is the Blaster worm,
which rapidly spread through the Internet in August 2003. Blaster targeted computers running
Windows operating systems, and used a vulnerability in Remote Procedure Call (RPC) code. Blaster
affected computers running Windows 2003 operating system, Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 4.0
Terminal Services Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. After compromising hundreds of
thousands of systems, Blaster launched a distributed denial of service attack on a Microsoft
Windows update site. Trojan horses– As the name implies, these are software programs that are put
onto target systems (whether by a direct hack, or as the result of a virus or worm) that have a
malicious intent. The Trojan can capture passwords, or provide root access to the system remotely.
Denial of service attacks (DoS)– A denial of service attack attempts to put the condition will often
times try to compromise many PC's, and use them to "amplify" the attack volume, and to hide his or
her tracks as well. This is called a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS). Denial of service
attacks have now become a well–known criminal activity. In an online form of the "protection

As he arrived he noticed that his old house had been knocked down. His head was racing he wasn't

Stanley Yelnats 'Change In Holes'
"We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are" said Max DePree. Change can't
be stopped; it's something that happens throughout life. Stanley Yelnats is one of many characters
that endures change in the book "Holes," but the changes that he goes through are what makes him a
better person. In the beginning of "Holes," Stanley is timid, insecure, and insincere, but as his fellow
inmate, Zero, influences him and their relationship becomes stronger, he transforms into a bold,
self–confident, and loyal boy.
In the beginning of the novel Stanley is timid, insecure, and insincere. When talking to X–Ray

When climbing "Big Thumb," stanley wanted to take a break and just rest for the remainder of the
day, but he decides "As long as Zero could keep going, he could keep going too." (Sachar 168) He
had a choice to give up for the day and rest, but he saw that Zero was still going even though he was
in worse condition than him. Stanley saw the steadfastness in Zero and it motivated him to keep
climbing up the mountain. As Stanley and Zero faced challenges when traveling up the mountain,
they ended up making an agreement to help each other, when needed. When Zero helped Stanley in
a time of need, Zero ended up with "... deep gashes in both hands. He had held on the metal blade of
the shovel, keeping it in place, as Stanley climbed. (Sachar 166) Zero's decision to help Stanley out,
even if it meant getting hurt in the process, showed that he was willing to sacrifice himself. Zero's
ability to sacrifice himself for a friend taught Stanley selflessness. When Stanley ended up getting
blamed for stealing Mr.Sir's sunflower seeds, he was surprised to see his hole had been dug for him
when he returned. "Why'd you help me? Stanley asked. Zero turned around. You didn't steal the
sunflower seeds." (Sachar 96) At this point, Stanley is realizing each boy's true colors. Zero didn't
have to dig the hole for him. Anyone but Zero should have dug the hole for Stanley because both
Stanley and Zero didn't have a part in stealing Mr.Sir's seeds. This is a great representation of Zero's
selflessness. As you can see, Zero played a huge part in influencing Stanley. Zero represented a
steadfast and selfless character, which rubbed off on

Character Of Stanley Holes
Holes is an award–winning children's novel by the talented, American author, Louis Sachar. The
protagonist, Stanley Yelnats IV, is an average teenage boy that is sentenced to a juvenile behavior
camp, Camp Green Lake, as he is accused of stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes. Throughout the
novel, the author describes Stanley as an overweight and shy teenager, that is bullied at school. For
someone to be a hero, they must be courageous, perseverant and committed. Stanley Yelnats is
bullied and endures a number of significant challenges during his life that helps transform him from
an average 14–year–old to a hero. Louis Sachar has clearly represented Stanley as a perseverant
individual as he doesn't give up when facing a challenge; courageous, as he is determined to find
Zero; and a reliable friend, as he is teaching his friend how to read, even at his worst times.
Stanley is depicted as a very perseverant individual as he never gives up when he undergoes a
difficult challenge. When Stanley comes to accept the test of surviving with no food and water, after
he runs away desperately searching for Zero, he doesn't give up and returns back to Camp Green
Lake. The author conveys the aim of Stanley never giving up, when he says– "Stanley awoke in a
meadow", on page 173. By saying this, the reader knows that Stanley and his friend made it to the
top of the mountain, and it creates an image in the reader's mind of WHAT it looks like. Stanley is
also demonstrating perseverance when he decides to ascend to the top of God's Thumb without any
resources, and by not giving up, he encounters himself in a peaceful meadow with onions to eat and
muddy water to drink. Stanley is also represented to be courageous when he runs away from camp
without any resources to keep him healthy in the hot, dried desert of Texas.
The author portrays Stanley to be a very courageous person throughout his journey. A courageous
person is someone who is not deterred by danger or pain and takes risks to help others. Stanley
displays his bravery when he runs away from camp without any food or water in search of his
friend, Zero. The author says– "He ran.", on page 148; this evidence displays Stanley to be a
courageous person, as he runs away from the

Characteristics Of Writing In Small Steps, By Louis Sachar
Author Style Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are
many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery
Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small
Steps. Small Steps is about how you have to do one thing at a time in life and not do so many things
at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the
reader engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his writing style.
First off, one style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle
between opposing forces or when two characters on a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a
conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, "She picked up her
cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream." Kira got mad at Armpit
because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was
really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store
stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author's style because Sachar likes
to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book
Small Steps is on page 199, "Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X–Ray gets hit on the side
of his head very hard by Moses who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X–Ray has. X–
Ray's glasses broke and his tickets were stolen by Moses while X–Ray laid on the floor after he got
punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. Secondly, another style that
Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative
language is language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal
interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. An
example of figurative

Identify some elements of the media text that are operating as signifiers and what their signifieds
are.
Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing

linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug.
Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a

Following on from McHigh's character is Kimberley Nixon's. Above Nixon's name is a photo frame

personality. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect
character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are
separated by the wall.
The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade
of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. It
could be perceived by the audience that Josh Thomas' character enjoys listening or playing music.

curse on Stanley and his family. In the book, it quotes "I should have just kept them," said Zero. "I'd

sneakers, then neither of us would be here right now." (41.27). Then later in the novel "[Stanley]
remembered what Zero had said a few days before. If Zero had just kept those shoes, then neither of
them would be here right now. As Stanley stared at the glittering night sky, he thought there was no
place he would rather be. He was glad Zero put the shoes on the parked car. He was glad they fell
from the overpass and hit him on the head. When the shoes first fell from the sky, he remembered
thinking that destiny had struck him. Now, he thought so again. It was more than a coincidence. It
had to be destiny". (42.26–28). This shows signs of fate in the book because if zero didn't throw the
shoes the curse would have never been lifted because Stanley and zero would have never

Why Does Stanley Exist In A Wasteland
Expository Essay:Holes Wasteland Essay Stanley (The thief) got accused of a very serious crime.
He claimed ("He didn't do it"). Stanley had to decide whether to go to Camp Green Lake or Prison.
Stanley thought that Camp Green Lake would be a fun, loving, and caring place. Stanley soon
realised that Camp Green Lake is probably worse than prison, and is just a shriveled up dry
wasteland. As you can see there are going to be several reasons to why Stanley is existing in a
wasteland.
Physical Environment
First and Foremost, Stanley's physical environment is not a positive place to be in. Camp Green
Lake is a very dangerous camp. There are many poisonous animals such as: Yellow spotted lizards,
snakes, and scorpions. All in which we know can affect a person's(Stanley's) life in a blink of an
eye. Camp Green Lake is a very unhealthy environment because the water is very scarce. There are
only TWO water truck stops a day. According to, "HOLES " (the book) there is a wreck room. ...

Stanley does not have a happy life because, he is overweight and has no friends. He gets bullied of

Stanley really had nothing to lose going to camp except for his parents.
People at Camp Everybody at camp is tremendously mean. There are several "bad boys" but, there
is one boy that thinks he is the boss of everything that goes on in camp. Stanley found a very
interesting artifact and, X–ray told him "it wouldn't be fair because he was at camp longer." The
adults are very peculiar. They dig holes every day but, the adults say they are not looking for
treasure. The warden and Mr.Sir give them exact measurements (how far to dig) and if they do find
a treasure to give it to them. I believe that seems very

Stanley's Monologue
When Stanley first got to Camp Green Lake he was timid, apprehensive, and hesitant, but now he's
dauntless, sympathetic, and worthy. Stanley Yelnats was very unlucky/ "cursed", he was accused of
stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes. He had been teased by all his classmates, and his teachers. "He
didn't have any friends at home." "He was overweight and often kids at his middle school often
teased him." "No–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather." Stanley is usually a
loner. At the beginning he had no friends, nobody. He would get teased by the whole
school...including the teachers! His family, well except his mom believed that he was cursed by his
great great grandfather. When Zero dug Stanley's hole, something changed he'd been sincere to

Main Character
The main character is a boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is about 10 years old. Stanley is a hard–
working, clever, and very pleasant person. He was blamed for stealing a famous person's shoes,
when they really had just fallen on his head while he was walking! Stanley had a great, great, great
grandfather that had put a curse on himself and all of the other generations of Yelnats after him!
Stanley's father was trying to find a way to recycle old shoes, and when the shoes fell on his head,

He didn't have a mom or dad. He is also kind of shy– he rarely says anything. Zero was Stanley's
friend. He had run away from Camp Green Lake before Stanley ran away, but Stanley found Zero
far away away from Camp Green Lake! He had found Kate Barlow's canned peaches when he ran
away, which he called "Sploosh". If he hadn't found the peaches, he wouldn't have survived! He and
stanley went to the top of God's Thumb, a big mountain. He and Stanley found wild onions growing
crazy everywhere on the top of God's Thumb, which they ate. Stanley took Zero back to Camp
Green Lake, and the mean warden deleted Zero's records on the computer! (the Warden is VERY
mean to everyone at Camp Green Lake!)
The Warden The warden is the owner of Camp Green Lake. The warden makes kids dig big holes in
the hot sun! She enforces all of the policies at Camp Green Lake. She cheats and lies about things–
one example is when she tried to delete Zero's records on the computer. She was in search for a
suitcase full of valuables, which Stanley and Zero found underground. The reason for making kids
dig holes is to find that suitcase underground. The warden found the suitcase, but she didn't get to
have it– Stanley got to take it home with him!

Sacrificial Friendship
In the book holes, written by Louis Sachar, Stanley Yelnats the main character is a poor, friendless,
over weighted boy who is constantly bullied at school. He is arrest one day for a crime that did not
commit. Stanley is therefore condemned to jail or to be sent to a place called Camp Green Lake for
eighteen months as he is unable to prove his innocence. Stanley chooses Camp Green Lake. But
upon arriving in the camp, Stanley discovers that it is actually a barren and desolate wasteland,
where boys are forced to dig holes in order to "build character". There, Stanley meets a few boys
who he will share a tent with, including a boy called Zero and a counselor called Mr. Pendanski who

As Stanley is about to leave Camp Green Lake he looks at Zero who has been with him all this
while, was his only true friend, he realizes that he cannot leave Zero behind. This prompts his
lawyer to have the Attorney General look up Zero's files, but is unable to find them, as a result Zero
is released from Camp Green Lake together with Stanley.
This uniquely formed friendship between Stanley and Zero reminds me of friendship between two
girls named Gemma and Alice, in a book I read in Grade four called Best Friends written by
Jacqueline Wilson. Gemma and Alice are two girls that are worlds apart. Gemma is a dare devil
tomboy who enjoys doing crazy, dangerous, and embarrassing things that often lands her into
trouble. Alice on the other hand, is a well behaved and mannered girly girl who unlike Gemma is a
good angel in the eyes of mostly everyone one who meets and knows her. Despite their differences
they have remain loyal and a good friends to each other, as they have practically known each other
all their life (even share the same birthday), and are inseparable. But when Alice begins to get very

something that Alice is keeping from her. As Alice later reveals to Gemma that she is moving away
to Scotland, this news is upsetting to both of them as it will mean that they will

Essay The Social Security Blanket: Full of Holes?
The Social Security Act was enacted in 1935, and since then it has undergone numerous revisions
and amendments. Today the act covers a wide range of benefit programs, including Medicare,
unemployment compensation, and Supplemental Security Income. The major portion for which the
Social Security Act has become known, however, is the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability
Insurance program, or OASDI. While today the OASDI program is most frequently referred to as
"Social Security," it is only a thread in what has been called the "social safety net." Therefore,
throughout this paper, it should be understood that Social Security will be the term used to refer to
all its encompassed programs as a group, as a matter of convenience. Recent budget ... Show more

Obviously, this is an enormous allocation of resources, and as such, it would be irresponsible to
deny that it has a far–reaching impact on the economy. Furthermore, these expenditures are, unless
counteracted, likely to continue to grow as they have since Social Security's first inception. The
championed cause of social responsibility is embodied in the Social Security program; at its core,
Social Security's mission is to provide assistance to the elderly and less–privileged in society.
Although it may have been a sound approach for its time – during the depths of the Great
Depression, when many were poor and unemployed and the economy may truly have benefited from
the increased spending – it has since become a bloated budgetary item. Many of its difficulties could
be said to stem from its "pay–as–you–go" funding plan. Social Security withholdings are not put
away for the future needs of the person from whom they are withheld, but are instead transferred to
an existing claimant. The pay–as–you–go system means that current recipients are paid for out of
current revenues. In good years, these revenues have outnumbered the claims laid to them, but it is
clear that that period is coming to an end. The Baby Boomers – a massive population segment who,
in their youth, contributed greatly to Social Security revenues – are now coming into their own as
retirees, and will no longer provide the revenue that they did in their working years.

Holes uses technical and symbolic film codes to establish the characters personality and what their
life and history is like. Body Paragraph 2: Character , 2 film codes Mr Sir The audience is
positioned to dislike Mr Sir through the use of film codes that portray his personality. Mr Sir works
at Camp Green Lake and he thinks that he is the boss of all the kids there, that is until the Warden
comes into the picture. When the warden comes Mr Sir is more quite and reserved as she
overpowers him. The technical codes display this using Camera Angles. When Mr Sir is with the
warden he is always behind her and the camera is always angled to make the Warden look bigger
and Mr Sir is always in the background. The effect created here is that the warden has more power
over Mr Sir. The viewer then gains a different perspective of Mr Sir's personality through these
technical codes. When Mr Sir was serving one of the juvenile delinquents lunch, he noticed a gash
which passed through the whole of Mr Sir's side of his face. However, they had no knowledge that
the reason for the gash was because of the Warden's snake venom nail polish used when Mr Sir did
not obey her rules and standards. Mr sir got very defensive of this scar on his face and grabbed the
camper and told him "Is there something wrong with my face, is there?". Mr Sir said this in a very

Analysis Of Small Steps
Author Style To start off, Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he
writes. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won
the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is
called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have one thing at a time in life and not do so many
things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep
the reader engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his writing style.
One style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between
opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a
conversation.
X–Ray gets hit on the side
of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X–Ray has. X–
Ray's glasses broke, and his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X–Ray lay on the floor after he got
punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. In addition to conflict,
another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative
language. Figurative language is a language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is
different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a linguistic
point. An example of figurative language in Small Steps

Stanley Yelnats 'Mistake In Holes' By Louis Sachar
When we think back on the mistakes we have made in life did any of them have a good outcome?
For young Stanley Yelnats in Holes by Louis Sachar, a mistake turned his life around. The mistake
put him in a bad place, but by the end of the story he had actually ended up with many good
outcomes. Stanley benefitted from many things from the mistake made by Hector Zeroni. Stanley
made a friend, received/ found a treasure, and also bettered himself as a person. Even though he got
pulled into a mess he did not let it destroy him as a person. He strived to better himself and those
around him. In the beginning of the story Stanley is a timid, bigger built, loving, and caring boy; but

It is not always about what is on the outside but what is on the inside. He has always been loving
and caring but through this rough time in his life it is shown a lot. He shows this side to his family
and also his new friends. After Stanley was done taking the blame for the spilt sunflower seeds and
zero digging Stanley's hole for him, Stanley showed Zero he cared for him; he agreed to teach him
to read. "I'll try to teach you to read if you want," Stanley offered. "I don't know how to teach, but
I'm not worn–out today, since you dug a lot of my hole." (Sachar, 96.) Stanley was grateful for what
Zero had done for him and wanted to repay the favor and help him out as well. When Stanley left for
camp his mom gave him pen and paper so he could write her and tell her how it was going. By
writing to his mom and telling her that he was okay, even though he lied about what he was doing he
showed he cared for his parents. "Dear Mom and Dad, Camp is hard, but challenging. We've been
running obstacle courses, and have to swim long distances on the lake. Tomorrow we learn" (Sachar,
81.) As the story comes to an end Stanley really cares about Zero and refuses to leave camp without
him. He gets his lawyer to ask for files and after the Attorney General could not find his files they
took Zero home with them. "C'mon Stanley," said his lawyer. "Your parents are waiting." Stanley
stayed where he was."

Quotes From Holes By Louis Sachar
"Why would anyone would want to go to Camp Green Lake"(Sachar 5). You will be surprised that
there is no lake at all. Where there was once a lake sits a dry, hot, wasteland. Everyone has a
different path to take in life. In the novel, Holes by Louis Sachar, the author teaches lessons about
friendship, perseverance, and overcoming obstacles. The main character Stanley, path to becoming a
better person involves climbing up a mountain, digging holes, and finding lost fortune. Stanley
arrived at Camp Green Lake an insecure, honest, and overweight kid. Stanley was sure he would be
picked on at Camp Green Lake because of his weight. "... was afraid it was going to collapse under
all his weight" (Sachar 23). That is to say that Stanley is scared that his weight would get him into
some trouble with the other boys. When Stanley was arrested he told the truth about what really
happen with the shoes. "'One hit me on the head'" ( 23). This quote demonstrates that Stanley is very
truthful because he told the truth at court. While at Camp Green Lake, Stanley was very insecure
about when the boys were looking and acting towards him. " The boys glanced ... Show more

was innocent for. Stanley writes a letter to his mom and dad thought Zero was making fun of him. "'

Holes by Lois Sachar, as the title suggests, has a lot to do with digging holes. The protagonist of the
book, Stanley is a 14–year old boy who is wrongly accused of a crime that he did not commit. This
false accusation is what sends him to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp. Stanley and the
other boys at the camp are to dig holes in the hot sun every day, "to build character". Stanley figures

What evidence does she use to prove her point? Do you find that evidence convincing? Why or why
not? Does any of the author's information (or conclusions) conflict with other books you've read,
courses you've taken or just previous assumptions you had of the subject? The author mentions a lot
of backstory on a broad period of time. He also uses characters to prove his point. Families from
three generations reunite in the end, the curse is broken. Stanley, the main character, grows
throughout his time at the camp. Stanley appears to be the hero of the book, but he isn't exactly the
hero type. When we are introduced to him he seems to be a teenager with no interest or commitment
to any interests in life. Stanley then enters camp where he is pushed around and does not speak up
for himself. Stanley wakes up everyday believing his life is cursed and that only failure awaits him.
Sachar, however, shows us the changes that Stanley goes through while he is at camp. When the
other boys give him the nickname, "Caveman", he feels like he has a place at camp and this boosts
his confidence. He begins talking and laughing with the other boys more. Later, he begins talking to
Zero, a quiet boy who rarely speaks. They become inseparable friends and together they shut Camp

Obedience, Disobedience, And Disobedience
Obedience and Disobedience in People in Relation to "Holes" People choose how they react to
authority based on several things. These include; how they were raised, how much respect they have
for the authoritative power, and how that authority has treated someone. This is shown in the novel
"Holes" by Louis Sachar because the main character, Stanley, is sent to a child correction camp and
has to obey the upper authority Mr. Sir. He starts out being an obedient child and following all Mr.
Sir's rules but then as he begins to see the real reason he is told to dig holes in a barren desert he
rebels against Mr. Sir. These acts of obedience and disobedience are then analyzed and explained by;
"Milgram Experiment" by Saul McLead, "Opinions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book Holes challenges this thought because even though the children, at one point or another,
have done something wrong that lead them to be there it does not mean they were doing it for the
wrong reasons or that they are bad people, they still have feelings and can learn to respect authority,
if that authority respects them. When Zero starts to tell Stanley that he was the one that stole the
shoes he says; ""We always took what we needed," Zero said. "When I was little, I didn 't even
know it was stealing. I don 't remember when I found out. But we just took what we needed, never
more" (Sachar 81). This quote shows how Zero was raised to disobey authority, but never knew it to
be wrong, and under all that emptiness there is an actual kid who is smart and brave. So according to
Brooks essay's theory the leaders should be nice and civil human beings, but they are not. Brooks
then goes on to state that "To have good leaders you have to have good followers" (594). This
thought is tested in "Holes" because while Mr. Sir and the Warden are corrupt leaders at camp Green
Lake they abuse their power and use fear to bend the children to their will, so have the children at
one point or another. This goes to show that what

Then onwards, the Yelnats were cursed. They always seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong

they always remained hopeful and persistent. In fact, Stanley's great–grandfather did make a fortune
in the stock market but bad luck befell on him too. He lost everything...he was robbed by one of the
most feared outlaws in all the west, Kissin' Kate Barlow and was left stranded in the middle of a
desert where he found refuge on "God's thumb." However, Stanley wiped out the curse when he
carried Hector Zeroni (Zero), Madame Zeroni's great–great–grandson up a mountain, made him
drink from the water and sang to him when they both ran away from Camp Green Lake; a juvenile
detention center for boys and found refuge on "God's thumb", on an onion field (that belonged to

fulfilled indirectly. As Stanley had heard a lot about his great–grandfather finding refuge on "God's

possibility where he and Zero could find refuge. Therefore, they climbed the mountain in the first

The novel Holes, written by Louis Sachar, demonstrates how the protagonist Stanley 'Caveman'
Yelnats, overcame problems and filled holes in his life at Camp Green lake which weren't there after
he left the juvenile centre.. Stanley had a few holes in his life such as not having a great physical
image, having a lack of confidence and not being strong enough. One feature which rapidly
improved and changed in Stanley's life during his course at Camp Green Lake was the aspect of
being overweight to becoming confident in his physique. Another wodge in his life was having no

Holes-Why is it a good novel for teenagers? Essay
Holes–Why is it a good novel for teenagers?
In this essay I intend to look at why the book 'Holes', is a good novel for teenagers to read. Written
by Louis Sachar in 1998, it is a modern novel telling readers a story about the life experiences of a
young boy called Stanley. The story revolves around Stanley being unfairly acquitted for a crime
leading to him being faced to cope with life at a juvenile detention centre. Along with this main plot,
there are several other underlying smaller plots that contribute towards the success of the story as a
whole.
I will examine the various reasons for why this book would appeal to teenagers. There are three
simultaneous plots, which creates more excitement and suspense for the ... Show more content on

The digging is supposed to be a "character building exercise" as the
Warden claims; however, the counsellors let the boys know that the warden wants to be alerted if
anything interesting is dug up. Stanley finds a fossil, but it doesn't quite qualify, but a gold–coloured
tube engraved with the initials K.B does.
Stanley builds a good friendly relationship with Zero and gets along with him more than anyone else
at Camp Green Lake. Stanley helps Zero to read, and in return Zero helps dig his hole. It doesn't
take long for Stanley to realise that there's more than character improvement going on at Camp
Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the deceitful warden is searching for something,
and before long Stanley begins his own search– for the truth. Fate conspires to resolve it all– the
family curse, the mystery of the holes, the drought that destroyed Green Lake, and also, the legend
of Kissing Kate Barlow, an infamous outlaw of the Wild West. The great wheel of justice has ground
slowly for generations, but now it is about to reveal its verdict. Because the story is based upon the
life of a teenager in an unusual setting, it may appeal to teenagers of this present time as it may
enable them to imagine and understand what life would be like for them in a more unfortunate
setting. Being a teenager myself, I can understand what teenagers might feel whilst reading this
book. At the end, Stanley was more of a hero

Compare And Contrast Perdita And King Lear
Similarly, Cordelia's father in Cat's Eye is harsh and demanding, especially over Cordelia, just as
Lear is over his daughters. Cordelia's father is not always present in the home, but "when Cordelia's
father is there, everything is different ... Nothing is forgotten" (Atwood 273). When their father is
not present, the home is more chaotic and frenzied. His presence brings order to the home, though it
produces a coldness toward Cordelia. Similar to the two sisters in King Lear, Perdita, Miranda, and
Cordelia "play up to" their father (274). However, Cordelia is not as skilled as her sisters in the art
of flattery. Though Cordelia tries her hardest to please him it is never enough, and she is consistently
left feeling inadequate.
Both Cordelia's father and Lear ultimately ignore their youngest daughter. Lear only ignores
Cordelia once he has rescinded his fatherly title from her, and she leaves to marry the King of
France. In contrast to Lear, Cordelia's father mostly ignores her the entire novel, while giving his
attention to her sisters. Cordelia tries to gain her father's affection to no avail, and this is one of the
biggest underlying sources of her bullying.
Because of the incompetence she feels from her father's neglect, she begins projecting her insecure
feelings and self–hatred onto Elaine. This contrasts Lear, as Cordelia is secure in who she is and
does not allow her father's rejection to hinder her spirit. When she speaks, she is sure of herself and
anyone else's insults or opinions rarely, if ever, sway her own morals. When Lear demands that she
proclaim her affection for him, she responds by stating, "unhappy that I am, I cannot heave/My heart
into my mouth. I love your Majesty/According to my bond, no more nor less" (1.1.91–92).
Secondly, the word "nothing" echoes throughout both of the works. King Lear begins its first scene
in Act One with Cordelia repeating "nothing" when Lear asks her if she has anything to say about
her love for him. Likewise, the beginning of Atwood's novel describes looking back in time and
compares it to water. It states that sometimes certain things come to the surface of the water while
other times nothing does, but that "nothing goes away" (Atwood 3). Another example of

Holes By Louis Sachar Essay
Have you ever been falsely accused of something you didn't do? Well, this happens in the realistic
fiction book, Holes by Louis Sachar. I strongly believe that you should read this well developed
book, for it has fascinating characters, the great message, and the astounding plot. The 14 year old
and main protagonist of the story named Stanley Yelnats goes through a series of unfortunate events
that leads him into an abusive camp. He is overweight, lonely in school, and gets bullied frequently.
In the camp, the requirement every day is to dig a hole five feet deep, and five feet across in every
direction. Because of the many kids in the camp, the landscape is full of holes, and looks dry and
beat up. Stanley eventually finds out there is more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though some might say that the book does not explain enough, and it gets confusing. I firmly
disagree. It may seem weird to have such an odd camp for punishment, but the storyline does
eventually explain it. As I said before, Stanley eventually finds out there is more to the camp than
everyone thinks. Many times, it's because of the explanation that makes the story interesting! I
assure you that everything fits in like a puzzle piece, and that's what so great about the book!
Overall, this argument is pointless. Continuing, the story includes many different mini–stories that
fits together. To illustrate my point, Stanley Yelnat's great–great–grandfather apparently put a curse
on the generations of Yelnats. The grandfather did not do an important task that he was suppose to
do, and a curse settled upon the generations. He "worked hard, but bad luck seemed to follow him
everywhere." This happening to the grandfather first, causes Stanley to have unfortunate timing.
This shows how everything together. All in all, this is another reason why you should read Holes.
As you can see, the book Holes has much to offer. Louis Sachar, the author, can give you one of the
best stories you've ever read. The well developed characters, the great message, and the beautifully
constructed plot are all great reasons why you should read it. Overall, I can reassure you that this
book will leave you interested for periods and

Holes(Louis Sachar Shows the Importance of Friendship in...
"Holes" shows the importance of friendship in times of trouble and danger. Discuss 'Holes' by Louis
Sachar is a phenomenal and superlative narrative. Entwining three remarkable stories from diverse
generations and genres, Holes demonstrates immensely proficient writing dexterity, explicitly
depicting the significance of earnest and genuine friendship in times of life's trials and tribulations.
This is exemplified when an averse and apprehensive Stanley and a despondent and barely
conversant Zero develop a friendship. Founded on mutual solicitous understanding this friendship
carries them through ominous and precarious times. Madame Zeroni and Elya Yelnats are two
characters further used to demonstrate the ineffable importance of ... Show more content on

When Elya had seen Myra he fell profoundly in love with her, despite the fact that Myra was
beautiful she was also extremely imprudent but nevertheless Elya refused to acknowledge this. Elya
had nothing to offer in exchange for her hand and was exceedingly distressed. When Madame
Zeroni heard Elya speak of his love for Myra she was infuriated but even more so when she heard of
Elya's nuptial plans. Madame Zeroni had great hopes for him, she yearned for him to go to America
and make something of himself. She had told him "Like my son. That's where your future lies. Not
with Myra Menke." (p.30) Irritated, Madame Zeroni strived vigorously to convince Elya against
marriage to Myra "...can she milk a cow? No... Can she have an intelligent conversation? No... Can
she look after you when you are sick? No......... She is silly and foolish...So she is beautiful, so
what?"(p.30). Madame Zeroni was exceptionally aggravated, she didn't stop there with the
defamations, she even told him Myra's head was 'as empty as a flower pot,' (p.29) but Myra's futility
was inconspicuous to Elya who was only fifteen, immature and naive. Madam Zeroni ostracized
seeing Elya dejected and against her better judgement she decided to help him. She gave him a
piglet and instructed him to carry the piglet up the mountain and sing to

Analysis Of Small Steps
Author Style Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are
many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery
Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small
Steps. Small Steps is about how you do one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once.
In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader
engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his writing style. First off,
one style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between
opposing forces or when two characters in a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a
conversation. According to the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, "She
picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream." Kira got
mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and
Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in
the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author's style because
Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of
conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, "Moses whacked him on the side of his head." X–
ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses, who is a man who wants the counterfeit
tickets that X–ray has. X–ray's glasses broke and his tickets were stolen by Moses, while X–ray lay
on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes.
Secondly, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is
figurative language. Figurative language is a language that uses words of expressions with a
meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to
make a particular linguistic point. According to the book Small Steps, an

Holes Stanley Character Analysis
Changes In Stanley
"Your diggin' holes to build character" is what Mr.sir would always say to the campers. At camp
green lake Stanley did holes but that didn't help his character. The only thing digging holes did for
him is help him lose weight. In holes Stanley met a boy named Zero, and Zero helped change from a
shy person to a brave person.
In the beginning of the novel "Holes" Stanley was basically a nobody. He got made fun of for being
overweight, was poor and was unlucky. " He was overweight and the kids at school often teased him
about his size(Pg 17). Stanley was probably one of heaviest kids in hs class. No one liked Stanley he
didn't even like himself. Stanley wasn't Just overweight he was poor." Stanley's parents could never

Everyone knows it's best not to talk back to the Warden. That is everyone, except for Stanley, "
Excuse me?" said the Warden. "All it matter is that the hole get's dug, so does it matter who digs it"
said Stanley. This is what he said when he was confronting the Warden to protect himself and Zero.
Zero was digging Stanley hole as a part of a deal, but Stanley and Zero both knew that they should
be digging their own hole. They knew what the did was wrong but they were remaining loyal to
each other. Before Stanley and Zero became great friends Stanley learned something about Zero. Zer
was not able to read or write. Stanley took that opportunity as a chance to care for Zero. " I can
teach you to read if you want." This shows that Stanley cared for Zero he couldn't do anything else
for him so he could at least help him to read and write. After Zero got in trouble, He ran away.
Stanley knew he just had to do something for his friend "He ran to go find Zero" This shows how
loyal Stanley is. Stanley could have just stayed back at camp but he cared so much about Zero that
he risked his life to go see if he was ok. Zero helped stanley become a better person from what he
was before. There was more to follow their

Review Of Stanley ' Stanley 's ' Holes '

Profitt Block: Period 3
Character Analysis of Stanley Stanley was a boy in middle school who was overweight. He got
teased, was cursed, and unlucky. Could his life get worse? In fact, it did and he was accused of a
crime he did not commit. He got sent to Camp Green Lake where he had a chance to change his life.
Stanley was cursed from his great– great grandfather who stole a pig. Later in Stanley's life, Stanley
goes through many difficult times. Throughout Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, Stanley is characterized
as unlucky, overweight, and weak, but by encountering people, changes, and difficulties, Stanley is
now lucky, fit, and caring by the end. In the beginning, Stanley is unlucky, overweight, and weak. ...

After all this happened at Stanley's years at school, Stanley got arrested and got sent to Camp Green
Lake where he had to dig holes, which he was very weak which made it difficult. "He tried to jam
[the shovel] into the earth, but the blade banged against the ground and bounced off without making
a dent" (page 26). When you jam a shovel into the earth, something has to come out. Stanley did
this, but he did not even leave a dent in the earth, which shows he is weak and not that good of a
digger. After going to camp and digging many holes, he met a boy named, Hector Zeroni (Zero), and
he slowly had a friend relationship with Zero. As a result of encountering Zero, Stanley significantly
changed. Stanley eventually became friends with Hector and had a loyal and kind relationship. "
[Stanley] could think of no reason why Zero would dig his hole for him" (page 95). Since Zero dug
Stanley's hole, it starts a tiny friend relationship. This shows Stanley and Zero's relationship because
Stanley now knows how Zero is and that makes Stanley change by making him nicer. Zero shows
how nice people can be. After they become friends, Zero is very loyal to Stanley. "All he could do
was wait for it to be over. Then, suddenly, Zigzag was off of him. Stanley managed to look up, and
he saw that Zero had his arms around Zigzag's long neck" (page 135). Zero is standing up for
Stanley which shows that Zero is loyal to

  • 1. Chapter Summaries Of Foreshadowing Of A Yellow Spotted... Chapter 1: Page 4: "You don't want to be bitten by a yellow spotted lizard, that's the worst thing that can happen to you. You will die a slow and painful death." Insights: This is an example of foreshadowing. I can assume that this statement will have an important factor to contribute in this story. Chapter 2: Page 5: "The judge said '"You may go to jail, or you may go to Camp Green Lake."' Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before. Insights: Of course Stanley would choose to go to a camp. It states in this quote that he had come from a house of little income. Therefore, he had never been to a camp, so he chose the camp. He thought that it wouldn't be that bad. Chapter 3: Page 7: "It was a family joke. Whenever anything went wrong, they always blamed Stanley's no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather." Insights: In this chapter its focusing a lot on this grandfather of his. If the grandfather had no meaning in the story, then why would they give information on a meaningless topic? They wouldn't, are they somehow stimulating that the grandfather is the cause of all this bad luck? Chapter 4: Page 13"The cap had a piece of cloth sewn on the back of it, for neck protection." Insights: Why would Stanley need a cap like that for camp? This is a piece of information that helps readers figure out what kind of environment Stanley must be in, and what challenges he may face. Stanley had thought and blamed his grandfather for everything especially in the book Holes by Louis Sachar. The theme is growing up because in the story Stanley loses his innocence, shows responsibility for others and himself, and shows learning by his and others mistake. In the story Stanley shows responsibility by carrying Zero up God's thumb and authority for his actions. Zero hadn't had food for days beside the "spoolsh" which was making his stomach crumple.Likewise, if stanley wouldn't have started teaching Zero to read and write or told the other boys that he was teaching Zero, then the boys wouldn't have ratted out Stanley. Mr.pendanski then wouldn't have told the warden and Mr.Sir about the lesson Stanley was giving Zero, Zero then wouldn't have never ran away. "Stanley took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him up right... He stood up, lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground."(Sachar,170).My quote proves Stanley has responsibility by when he says that he was teaching Zero to read and write when he knew he was going to get in trouble in the end. Also when he had ... • 9. The Social Security Blanket: Full of Holes? Essay Recent budget controversy in Congress and the media has once again brought to the fore the pressing desire for fiscal responsibility in the United States Government. Although Congress came to a compromise in the proverbial eleventh hour, the extra attention afforded to the budget issue reignited a lingering controversy: is the current system of transfer payment, or "welfare," programs a financially viable one, or should these programs be recognized as an economic burden? To answer that, it is necessary to identify which programs demand the largest portion of funding; this distinction is awarded to the Social Security program, the funding for which is considered "mandatory" and constituted about 56% of the budget for 2011 (Office of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of its difficulties could be said to stem from its "pay–as–you–go" funding plan. Social Security withholdings are not put away for the future needs of the person from whom they are withheld, but are instead transferred to an existing claimant. The pay–as–you–go system means that current recipients are paid for out of current revenues. In good years, these revenues have outnumbered the claims laid to them, but it is clear that that period is coming to an end. The Baby Boomers – a massive population segment who, in their youth, contributed greatly to Social Security revenues – are now coming into their own as retirees, and will no longer provide the revenue that they did in their working years. Instead, they will be expecting at least a partial return for their years of labor and withheld income, in the form of retirement benefits. The program which will provide those benefits, OASDI, is one of the most costly under the banner of Social Security; its expenditures were propped up by the very generation that now seeks to claim from it. This will have a startling effect on the funding for Social Security. Indeed, the Baby Boomer generation may have been one of the reasons Social Security looked successful at all: because ... A fictional case study is provided along with an analysis of past, present, and future technological threats. The combination of a historic apathy towards computer security and an increased reliance on technology may soon lead to a real–world "cybercatastrophe". I first learned about computer hacking from an article featured in the New York Times magazine several years ago. It described the life of members of a hacking group known as L0pht. Horizon successfully altered the destinations of several trains, causing them to collide, killing hundreds in the process. Brake systems on new–model cars were triggered, causing multi–car accidents on major highways. Automated devices in hospitals ceased working altogether, leaving many patients without critical life support. As a final touch, Horizon diverted several airplanes to the corporate headquarters of Microsoft in nearby Redmond, Washington, burning the complex to the ground with a multitude of personnel still inside. Rescue efforts were initiated immediately, but the severity of the attacks left the dead numbering in the thousands. • 49. Character Of Stanley Holes Holes is an award–winning children's novel by the talented, American author, Louis Sachar. The protagonist, Stanley Yelnats IV, is an average teenage boy that is sentenced to a juvenile behavior camp, Camp Green Lake, as he is accused of stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes. Throughout the novel, the author describes Stanley as an overweight and shy teenager, that is bullied at school. For someone to be a hero, they must be courageous, perseverant and committed. Stanley Yelnats is bullied and endures a number of significant challenges during his life that helps transform him from an average 14–year–old to a hero. Louis Sachar has clearly represented Stanley as a perseverant individual as he doesn't give up when facing a challenge; courageous, as he is determined to find Zero; and a reliable friend, as he is teaching his friend how to read, even at his worst times. Stanley is depicted as a very perseverant individual as he never gives up when he undergoes a difficult challenge. When Stanley comes to accept the test of surviving with no food and water, after he runs away desperately searching for Zero, he doesn't give up and returns back to Camp Green Lake. The author conveys the aim of Stanley never giving up, when he says– "Stanley awoke in a meadow", on page 173. By saying this, the reader knows that Stanley and his friend made it to the top of the mountain, and it creates an image in the reader's mind of WHAT it looks like. Stanley is also demonstrating perseverance when he decides to ascend to the top of God's Thumb without any resources, and by not giving up, he encounters himself in a peaceful meadow with onions to eat and muddy water to drink. Stanley is also represented to be courageous when he runs away from camp without any resources to keep him healthy in the hot, dried desert of Texas. The author portrays Stanley to be a very courageous person throughout his journey. A courageous person is someone who is not deterred by danger or pain and takes risks to help others. Stanley displays his bravery when he runs away from camp without any food or water in search of his friend, Zero. The author says– "He ran.", on page 148; this evidence displays Stanley to be a courageous person, as he runs away from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Characteristics Of Writing In Small Steps, By Louis Sachar Author Style Louis Sachar writes in many different styles in the different books he writes. There are many different books that he has written and has gotten many awards. Sachar won the Newbery Medal for one of his top selling books, called Holes. Another book that he is written is called Small Steps. Small Steps is about how you have to do one thing at a time in life and not do so many things at once. In the book Small Steps, Louis Sachar uses figurative language, conflict to help keep the reader engaged, and uses the same character's name in multiple of his books as his writing style. First off, one style that Louis Sachar uses in the book Small Steps is conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or when two characters on a story get in a fist fight or just a fight over a conversation. In the book Small Steps, an example of conflict is on page 217, "She picked up her cup and tossed the contents at him, splattering him with coffee and cream." Kira got mad at Armpit because Armpit said that Kira should consider another profession besides singing and Kira was really upset that Armpit said that. Kira tossed the cup of coffee at him while everyone in the store stared at Armpit with coffee all over his shirt. This relates to the author's style because Sachar likes to use a lot conflict in his books to keep the reader engaged. Another example of conflict in the book Small Steps is on page 199, "Moses whacked him on the side of his head. X–Ray gets hit on the side of his head very hard by Moses who is a man who wants the counterfeit tickets that X–Ray has. X– Ray's glasses broke and his tickets were stolen by Moses while X–Ray laid on the floor after he got punched in the face. Sachar uses a lot of conflict in the books he writes. Secondly, another style that Louis Sachar uses in his books, especially Small Steps and Holes, is figurative language. Figurative language is language that uses words of expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. It also uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. An example of figurative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing is strictly Non– Smoking." The prefix 'non' is crossed out and replaced with the "weed". This linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug. Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a television set with an abstract green visual. This visual could be signified as similar to a computer screensaver. A metallic toy robot is indicated which creates sparks. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are separated by the wall. The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. The major portion for which the Social Security Act has become known, however, is the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance program, or OASDI. While today the OASDI program is most frequently referred to as "Social Security," it is only a thread in what has been called the "social safety net." Therefore, throughout this paper, it should be understood that Social Security will be the term used to refer to all its encompassed programs as a group, as a matter of convenience. Recent budget ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously, this is an enormous allocation of resources, and as such, it would be irresponsible to deny that it has a far–reaching impact on the economy. Furthermore, these expenditures are, unless counteracted, likely to continue to grow as they have since Social Security's first inception. The championed cause of social responsibility is embodied in the Social Security program; at its core, Social Security's mission is to provide assistance to the elderly and less–privileged in society. Although it may have been a sound approach for its time – during the depths of the Great Depression, when many were poor and unemployed and the economy may truly have benefited from the increased spending – it has since become a bloated budgetary item. The Baby Boomers – a massive population segment who, in their youth, contributed greatly to Social Security revenues – are now coming into their own as retirees, and will no longer provide the revenue that they did in their working years. ... Mr Sir works at Camp Green Lake and he thinks that he is the boss of all the kids there, that is until the Warden comes into the picture. When the warden comes Mr Sir is more quite and reserved as she overpowers him. The technical codes display this using Camera Angles. When Mr Sir is with the warden he is always behind her and the camera is always angled to make the Warden look bigger and Mr Sir is always in the background. The effect created here is that the warden has more power over Mr Sir. The viewer then gains a different perspective of Mr Sir's personality through these technical codes. When Mr Sir was serving one of the juvenile delinquents lunch, he noticed a gash which passed through the whole of Mr Sir's side of his face. However, they had no knowledge that the reason for the gash was because of the Warden's snake venom nail polish used when Mr Sir did not obey her rules and standards. Mr sir got very defensive of this scar on his face and grabbed the camper and told him "Is there something wrong with my face, is there?". Mr Sir said this in a very powerful and aggressive tone. Where there was once a lake sits a dry, hot, wasteland. Everyone has a different path to take in life. In the novel, Holes by Louis Sachar, the author teaches lessons about friendship, perseverance, and overcoming obstacles. The main character Stanley, path to becoming a better person involves climbing up a mountain, digging holes, and finding lost fortune. Stanley arrived at Camp Green Lake an insecure, honest, and overweight kid. Stanley was sure he would be picked on at Camp Green Lake because of his weight. "... was afraid it was going to collapse under all his weight" (Sachar 23). That is to say that Stanley is scared that his weight would get him into some trouble with the other boys. When Stanley was arrested he told the truth about what really happen with the shoes. "'One hit me on the head'" ( 23). These include; how they were raised, how much respect they have for the authoritative power, and how that authority has treated someone. This is shown in the novel "Holes" by Louis Sachar because the main character, Stanley, is sent to a child correction camp and has to obey the upper authority Mr. Sir. He starts out being an obedient child and following all Mr. Sir's rules but then as he begins to see the real reason he is told to dig holes in a barren desert he rebels against Mr. Sir. The book Holes challenges this thought because even though the children, at one point or another, have done something wrong that lead them to be there it does not mean they were doing it for the wrong reasons or that they are bad people, they still have feelings and can learn to respect authority, if that authority respects them. When Zero starts to tell Stanley that he was the one that stole the shoes he says; ""We always took what we needed," Zero said. "When I was little, I didn 't even know it was stealing. I don 't remember when I found out. But we just took what we needed, never more" (Sachar 81). This quote shows how Zero was raised to disobey authority, but never knew it to be wrong, and under all that emptiness there is an actual kid who is smart and brave. So according to Brooks essay's theory the leaders should be nice and civil human beings, but they are not. Brooks then goes on to state that "To have good leaders you have to have good followers" (594). This thought is tested in "Holes" because while Mr. Sir and the Warden are corrupt leaders at camp Green Lake they abuse their power and use fear to bend the children to their will, so have the children at one point or another. He lost everything...he was robbed by one of the most feared outlaws in all the west, Kissin' Kate Barlow and was left stranded in the middle of a desert where he found refuge on "God's thumb." However, Stanley wiped out the curse when he carried Hector Zeroni (Zero), Madame Zeroni's great–great–grandson up a mountain, made him drink from the water and sang to him when they both ran away from Camp Green Lake; a juvenile detention center for boys and found refuge on "God's thumb", on an onion field (that belonged to Sam) just like Stanley's great–grandfather did. Apparently, Madame Zeroni's wish had just been fulfilled indirectly. Written by Louis Sachar in 1998, it is a modern novel telling readers a story about the life experiences of a young boy called Stanley. The story revolves around Stanley being unfairly acquitted for a crime leading to him being faced to cope with life at a juvenile detention centre. Along with this main plot, there are several other underlying smaller plots that contribute towards the success of the story as a whole. I will examine the various reasons for why this book would appeal to teenagers. There are three simultaneous plots, which creates more excitement and suspense for the ... Stanley finds a fossil, but it doesn't quite qualify, but a gold–coloured tube engraved with the initials K.B does. Stanley builds a good friendly relationship with Zero and gets along with him more than anyone else at Camp Green Lake. Stanley helps Zero to read, and in return Zero helps dig his hole. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realise that there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the deceitful warden is searching for something, and before long Stanley begins his own search– for the truth. Fate conspires to resolve it all– the family curse, the mystery of the holes, the drought that destroyed Green Lake, and also, the legend of Kissing Kate Barlow, an infamous outlaw of the Wild West. The great wheel of justice has ground slowly for generations, but now it is about to reveal its verdict. Because the story is based upon the life of a teenager in an unusual setting, it may appeal to teenagers of this present time as it may enable them to imagine and understand what life would be like for them in a more unfortunate setting. • 133. Compare And Contrast Perdita And King Lear Similarly, Cordelia's father in Cat's Eye is harsh and demanding, especially over Cordelia, just as Lear is over his daughters. Cordelia's father is not always present in the home, but "when Cordelia's father is there, everything is different ... Nothing is forgotten" (Atwood 273). When their father is not present, the home is more chaotic and frenzied. His presence brings order to the home, though it produces a coldness toward Cordelia. Similar to the two sisters in King Lear, Perdita, Miranda, and Cordelia "play up to" their father (274). However, Cordelia is not as skilled as her sisters in the art of flattery. Though Cordelia tries her hardest to please him it is never enough, and she is consistently left feeling inadequate. Both Cordelia's father and Lear ultimately ignore their youngest daughter. Lear only ignores Cordelia once he has rescinded his fatherly title from her, and she leaves to marry the King of France. In contrast to Lear, Cordelia's father mostly ignores her the entire novel, while giving his attention to her sisters. Cordelia tries to gain her father's affection to no avail, and this is one of the biggest underlying sources of her bullying. Because of the incompetence she feels from her father's neglect, she begins projecting her insecure feelings and self–hatred onto Elaine. This contrasts Lear, as Cordelia is secure in who she is and does not allow her father's rejection to hinder her spirit. When she speaks, she is sure of herself and anyone else's insults or opinions rarely, if ever, sway her own morals. When Lear demands that she proclaim her affection for him, she responds by stating, "unhappy that I am, I cannot heave/My heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty/According to my bond, no more nor less" (1.1.91–92). Secondly, the word "nothing" echoes throughout both of the works. King Lear begins its first scene in Act One with Cordelia repeating "nothing" when Lear asks her if she has anything to say about her love for him. Likewise, the beginning of Atwood's novel describes looking back in time and compares it to water. It states that sometimes certain things come to the surface of the water while other times nothing does, but that "nothing goes away" (Atwood 3). Another example of ... It may seem weird to have such an odd camp for punishment, but the storyline does eventually explain it. As I said before, Stanley eventually finds out there is more to the camp than everyone thinks. Many times, it's because of the explanation that makes the story interesting! I assure you that everything fits in like a puzzle piece, and that's what so great about the book! Overall, this argument is pointless. Continuing, the story includes many different mini–stories that fits together. To illustrate my point, Stanley Yelnat's great–great–grandfather apparently put a curse on the generations of Yelnats. The grandfather did not do an important task that he was suppose to do, and a curse settled upon the generations. He "worked hard, but bad luck seemed to follow him everywhere." This happening to the grandfather first, causes Stanley to have unfortunate timing. This shows how everything together. All in all, this is another reason why you should read Holes.
