"There is no greater problem confronting mankind than learning how to live
together. But as we are spending astronomical sums each day in learning to die
together, cannot we spend a little time in searching for a means of living
together?"
We had Prof Krishnamurthy
at our meeting last week
talking on something that
will impact us hugely over
the coming years – nano
technology.

Nano is small, and how small? It is one billionth of a meter. A human hair is 100,000 nanometers thick. That is how
small nano is.And what is so special about a nano particle? Its surface area. Smaller size means larger surface area,
leading to a billion times more atoms and molecules on the surface, for the same volume. This aspect of a nano

could be adopted towards nanotechnology. Huge areas of applications are – Integrated circuits in computing, waste
management, mechanical heat transfer, space, aerodynamics, sensors, coolants, lubricants, sustainable energy as in photo-voltaic
cells, in medicine and pharma as in water insoluble drugs for cancer, electronics, textiles, wearables like jackets, shoes, household

World Water Day 22 March
Water and energy are closely interlinked and interdependent. Energy generation and
transmission requires utilization of water resources, particularly for hydroelectric,
nuclear, and thermal energy sources. Conversely, about 8% of the global energy
generationisusedforpumping, treating andtransporting watertovariousconsumers.
In 2014, the UN System – working closely with its Member States and other relevant stakeholders – is
collectively bringing its attention to the water-energy nexus, particularly addressing inequities, especially
for the 'bottom billion' who live in slums and impoverished rural areas and survive without access to safe
drinking water, adequate sanitation, sufficient food and energy services. It also aims to facilitate the
development of policies and crosscutting frameworks that bridge ministries and sectors, leading the way
to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy. Particular attention will be paid to
identifyingbestpracticesthatcanmakeawater-andenergy-efficient'GreenIndustry'areality.
ObjectivesofWorldWaterDayin 2014
• Raiseawarenessoftheinter-linkagesbetweenwaterandenergy
• Contribute to a policy dialogue that focuses on the broad range of issues related to the nexus of water
andenergy
• Demonstrate, through case studies, to decision makers in the energy sector and the water domain that
integrated approaches and solutions to water-energy issues can achieve greater economic and social
impacts
• Identify policy formulation and capacity development issues in which the UN system, in particular UN-
WaterandUN-Energy,canoffersignificant contributions
• Identify key stakeholders in the water-energy nexus and actively engaging them in further developing
thewater-energylinkages
• Contribute asrelevanttothepost-2015discussionsinrelationtothewater-energynexus.

Father figure
There were three fathers to be in a
hospital waiting room, waiting for
their babies to be born.
The first nurse comes out and tells the
first father, "Congratulations you're
the father of twins!"
He says, “Great! I am the manager for
the Minnesota Twins.”
The second nurse comes out and tells
the second father, "Congratulations
you're the father of triplets!”
He says, "That's cool! I work for 3M.”
The third father runs screaming out
the front door.
The third nurse comes out, and asks,
“Where's the third father?"
One of the other fathers said, "Oh he
just ran out the door.”
The nurse asks, "Why?"
He replied, "He works for 7-Up!”
