Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

ISSUE 18 FEBRUARY 2015
I hope that you all had a pleasant
Christmas – for the retail world it was
certainly a challenging environment in
which to operate, as proved by recently
declared results from some of the ‘big
names’ Online retailing, both in food and
non-food continues to grow and has had
a dramatic change in the way goods are
acquired. We may be buying the same
things but now, increasingly, we are
buying them in a different way.
Traditionally, over many years and
perhaps even generations, sales
have peaked in the final week before
Christmas – now a thing called Black
Friday has changed things. Will this
change last? Highly unlikely as the
intense competition, both nationally
and internationally, will generate new
initiatives and innovations to increase
market share.
I often refer to the constant march
of change - nothing stays the
same! Change is both desirable and
inevitable. All businesses, including
ours, are always subject to change and
reinvention. Competition both amongst
our competitors and amongst our
customers will become increasingly
stronger and a key facet of maintaining
and growing a business is the ability to
adapt and improve the change. As a
company, while 2014 was a good year
for us, both in terms of growth and
performance, it is now over and gone.
We must all now refocus and redefine
our hopes and objectives for the coming
challenges of 2015. A General Election
will take place in May this year, and the
new administration will look to make
changes – why? Because nothing stays
the same!
I have watched the development and
change – I can’t get away from that
word – of Chainmail with both interest
and pride and we must all appreciate
the organisation and drive Pat brings to
the publication. Personally I like to enjoy
the many pictures of our people and
what has been happening within their
own worlds – the birth of children
and grandchildren, the achievement
of exam and personal success, the
addition of new people starting their life
with Lloyd Fraser are all integral parts of
who we are. Regrettably there is also the
mention of the passing of colleagues but
this allows us to give our appreciation
of the part the individuals have played
and also their colleagues’ sadness at
their loss. Pat, Mike and I are adamant
that Chainmail exists for all of you and
would welcome any honest feedback,
suggestions or criticisms you may have.
May I wish both you and all your families
a happy 2015 and hope your changes
will be positive!
Welcome to this latest edition of Chainmail, and please
accept my best wishes to you and your families for a
happy and prosperous 2015!

Award for
Donating Blood
Trish Wingfield, from our Ashbourne depot,
is seen below receiving her award for
donating a staggering 75 pints of blood -
although not all in one go!
What an achievement!
What a year we had in 2014. Milk
volumes continued on an upward
trajectory and by April it was evident
we were in for a busy time with all
depots showing growth year on year
irrespective of where the particular
buyer was sitting in the milk price
league. Sometimes milk volume can
seem somewhat of a ‘black art’ but
on this occasion our clients seemed
to agree that the price of cattle
feed was unexpectedly quite low in
relation to the price farmers could
get for the milk, giving a clear
indication that it was a good time
to produce milk. They did so in
abundance and by the end of
spring we were reporting figures
consistently at least 10% up on the
previous year, with Arla in particular
seeming to have to have its business
offer just about right and the others
only a little behind.
At possibly our busiest time, Arla
asked Lloyd Fraser to support an
entirely new operation in South West
Wales but the joint efforts of all the
depots and the influx of new
equipment [20 ex farm trucks in all
nationwide] ensured we were able
to set up a small operation near
Carmarthen and run it from June
onwards and without major
mishap. Indeed, Arla was so
impressed with the performance of
the operation that, following a
tender over the summer, they have
now awarded Lloyd Fraser a long
term contract to be their partners
in South West Wales commencing
in April 2015, having rejected
strong proposals from fierce
competition during this process. Our
success, is in no small part due to the
performance of everyone since June,
it really has been a superb team
effort.
Other notable business gains
since the last issue of Chainmail
have also come in the Southern
region too where Lloyd Fraser
continues to grow strongly. I am
pleased to report that after talking to
themforsometime,wehavefinallygot
OMSCo‘overtheline’andcommenced
their South Western collections from
Milborne in October, thereby
providing an addition to the
work we already perform for this
important client in Dalton. Thanks
especially Nigel, Rob and John at
Milborne on this one who it is fair to
say had a baptism of fire with this very
exacting client and also to Les
Corbett’s I.T Team for sorting out
the data transfer and integration
issues, which are always a
considerable hurdle to overcome.
Mary Conway joined the team in
Milborne too having looked after
OMSCo for their former haulier for
some time. Consequently Mary has
already provided Lloyd Fraser with
some invaluable local experience and
we wish her every success for a long
association with Lloyd Fraser.
I am also announcing the securing
of an entirely new customer, namely
Crediton Dairies in Devon for whom
Lloyd Fraser will be commencing a
five year farm collection contract in
April 2015. Collecting milk in an area
from Exeter to Barnstaple, Crediton
Dairies will be operated as part of
the Milborne business, initially with
3 farm collection trucks and from an
outbase yet to be finalized. It is
particularly pleasing to announce
customers because it shows that our
reputation for service gets around,
not just existing clients but to the
Dairy Industry at large. Crediton
Dairies formed as a Management
Buyout from Arla Foods in 2012 and
specialize in UHT and flavoured milk
products.
Another reason the overall
operation went so well last year
was due to the commitment of our
drivers and maintenance staff, in
particular, who kept our ever aging
vehicles on the road despite difficult
circumstances. We continued with
the renewal programme throughout
2014 when we purchased 20 new
ex farm vehicles and 23 reload
trailers which filtered into the
business from April onwards
under the ever watchful eye of John
Whiston. John was due to retire fully
in October but with so much still to
do has frankly not found the time and
I for one am grateful that he didn’t!
I would just like to end with special
thanks and congratulations to John
Joyce at Dalton. Always willing to
assist with other ventures as well as
running a milk collection field from
the Midlands to the Scottish borders,
John has this year ably assisted at
Greenford, Milborne and Devizes
as well as running the ‘odd’ reload
around the country to keep his hand
in. Consequently, and as a result of
the endorsement of his peers, I would
like to congratulate him on being the
latest recipient of the “Henry Harvey
Memorial Trophy, something he richly
deserves.
See you all next time!

It is with great regret that we have to report the
sad loss of Steven Wood who passed away on
12th January 2015, following a long battle with
Leukaemia.
Steven joined the Fashion Division in September 2011
as a Class 2 driver at our then Rochdale depot, later
transferring to the new site in Winsford in April 2014.
He will be sadly missed by his colleagues and all who
knew him.
They are being used to trunk the goods
of Fashion clients from Winsford to
Scotland, Scotland to Winsford, and
Greenford to Winsford.
Following a few snagging issues and
alterations they proved very useful
over the Christmas period with their
increased capacity.
These longer semi-trailers (LSTs)
have a 3 metre internal lifting deck, to
facilitate loading of the upper deck, as
well as a 3rd ramp in the lower deck
to enable loading of the swan neck.
The swan neck also has a 4m
section of the upper deck that raises to
facilitate loading.

New Faces at Mercury Recruitment
The Milborne depot gives a Christmas tree to their local primary
school, Milborne St Andrew First School, each year. Here we see
Nigel House and Pete Jackson at the school with the 2014 tree
and some of the children in their very fetching Christmas
jumpers!!
The school council chose Save the Children as the children’s
charity to support this year and all the pupils were invited to
wear their silliest, sparkliest or cosiest Christmas woollies to
school and to make a donation to the charity.

The ladies at Dalton have been
provided with a new Corporate look
following the gentlemen who have
been wearing bespoke Lloyd Fraser
shirts for some time.
Denise, Linzi and Lorraine,
all looking very smart!!!!
Many congratulations to Paul Evans who
successfully passed his LGV Instructor
course at RTITB at Telford in December.
Paul passed the very difficult course
with flying colours.
Here he is with his instructor, Richard
Brewer.
Three colleagues from the Droitwich depot have
achieved 25 years’ service this year.
The service is made up of time with Lloyd Fraser
since 1999, and the rest with previous milk
employers at Droitwich.
Congratulations to Dave Hyett, Nick Harrison,
and Steve Hyett.
Gary Dawson, supervisor at
Ashbourne depot, has retired
as an Ashbourne retained
firefighter.
He has retired after almost 19 years,
during which time he has attended
hundreds of call-outs.
He first joined the Ashbourne
station after he spoke to someone
already working there and heard that
more people were being taken on as
retained firefighters.
Gary said that, “As a child, I did not
yearn to be a firefighter and I had
no desire to sign up
full-time as an adult.
Gary has admitted that
he had attended some
harrowing incidents
and seen a lot of “grief
and death”, but that overall he had
enjoyed his time with the fire service.
He said that, “It has been great
being part of a team, all working
towards the same goal to help people.
I will miss the lads and lasses at the
station, who are all so highly trained,
but it will give me more time to
be with my family.”
He has attended hundreds of
call-outs during his 19 years as a
retained firefighter based at
Ashbourne fire station and Station
Commander Paul Holmes said that
Gary would be “sorely missed”.
At a leaving reception, Gary was
presented with a statuette of a
firefighter to mark the occasion.
Simon Hall retains Ashbourne depot together with the additional
responsibility of being depot manager for Droitwich depot. Mostyn
Arnold, depot manager for New Inn, transfers his responsibility
of Droitwich depot to Simon but takes on responsibility for the
Cadbury contract at Devizes.
We wish them both well in their new ventures.
