Progressivism aimed to reform society and improve living conditions in the early 20th century. Reformers sought to address unfair treatment of workers, expose corruption through muckraking journalism like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, and establish settlement houses including Jane Addams' Hull House to help the poor in cities dealing with epidemics, unsafe water, and lack of sanitation. Several amendments were passed as part of the Progressive Era to enact political reforms such as giving women the right to vote with the 19th Amendment and establishing the federal income tax with the 16th Amendment.
