The document discusses CEOs' lack of presence on social media and the paradoxes therein. While most Fortune 500 CEOs do not have social media profiles, being socially engaged online can help CEOs strengthen connections with customers, employees and investors. The CEO of the future will likely be a socially engaged leader who uses social media strategically to benefit the company.

The document discusses a study conducted by Weber Shandwick on CEO sociability and social media engagement. Some key findings from the study include:
- CEO social media participation has increased significantly from 36% in 2010 to 66% in 2012.
- Executives generally view social CEOs positively and see benefits like improved communication, innovation, and reputation. However, not all CEOs need to engage on social media directly.
- While social media is important, CEOs can also engage internally through company intranets and websites to connect with employees and other audiences.
- CEO blogging in particular seems to provide benefits like strengthening relationships with the media and enhancing credibility.
Leaders, by definition, go first. That’s why it’s so astounding that 70% of Fortune 500 CEOs still do not have a social presence. Every day, new studies arise making the case for social CEOs — and the benefits to employees, shareholders, customers and influencers. At a time when most of the planet is online, your company — and its reputation — cannot afford to be left behind.
Many hurdles traditionally stood in the way of CEOs’ entry into the world of social media. Top barriers cited in prior Weber
Shandwick research on “unsocial” CEOs in 2013 included: social media usage by CEOs was unusual for the industry or region,
there was no proof that it returns value, there was no demand, and it was too risky. Interestingly, barriers such as legal
obstruction and industry regulation were infrequently raised (The Social CEO: Executives Tell All, Weber Shandwick and KRC
Research). Much to their credit, CEOs are overcoming these challenges and, to a growing degree, embracing the opportunities
that come from being social.
Operating in an increasingly connected and transparent digital world where the general public is acutely attuned to what CEOs
say and do, executives see online engagement as a prime opportunity for their chief executives to share their companies’
stories and elevate the reputation of their companies. With eight in 10 global executives reporting that it is important for
CEOs to have a visible public profile for a company to be highly regarded, online channels and social media become one set of
tools for CEOs to increase their external equity. And doing so comes with reputational rewards: highly regarded companies
are more than three times as likely as those with weak reputations to have a CEO who participates in social media. (The CEO

CEO Study Collaboration and co-creation are shaping every industry in one way or another. For example, the 750 CEOs we surveyed last year year told us a lot about where their companies get the best ideas. Note that after “employees,” the next seven sources are external ... They’re getting about twice as many innovation insights from customers as they are from the sales and service units who work directly with those customers. Their own R&D functions came in eighth!! What they’re realizing is that they no longer have to create – and own -- everything themselves, as they once believed. People know they need to innovate. They’re looking for a way to create new value for their clients …or to create jobs for their citizens. That is the struggle today. It’s no longer about the race to best, but about the race to be special.
