The cenotes are natural underwater caves in Mexico formed by soil erosion over years. They contain stalactites and stalagmites, and holes of light where erosion began. Cenotes often connect rivers to the ocean. The most well-known are in Yucatan, where scientists have found corpses of indigenous people who mistook the water for air. One popular tourist cenote is near Cancun, though more remain undiscovered.
