2. History:
• Cemetery monument policy exception requested by Mr. Jerry Smith at
the May, 2016 Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting: Denied
request
• Mr. Smith spoke at “Hear Citizen’s” at the July 14, 2016 Council
meeting requesting that the Cemetery Ordinance be amended:
referred back to staff
• Letter sent by Parks and Recreation Director restating the Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board stance
• At request of Mr. Smith, a meeting was set up in October, 2016 with
Mr. Smith and his daughter, Chuck Gilman, and David Schmitz to
discuss the suggested changes to the Cemetery Ordinance.
3. History:
• Staff and Legal Department reviewed the Cemetery Ordinance and came
up with changes to align the footstone requirements with what is allowed
for headstones and ability for two cremains or combination of casket and
cremains to be in a single space. Section 1-29: E(7)
• Went back to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in Jan. 10, 2017 for
consideration: Recommended approval
• Section 1-29: J(5), K(2d), K(3g)
• “Exception – One flat foot marker not to exceed seventy-two (72)” inches in length is
allowed when family or double monuments are placed on a minimum of two
adjoining standard spaces. All other regulations still apply.”
• Accomplishes two things:
• Corrects discrepancies in current Cemetery Ordinance
• Allows for Mr. Smith’s request
