This study examined biology student teachers' misconceptions about mitosis through drawings and interviews. 124 student teachers participated in the study. They were asked to draw the process of mitosis in a cell. Their drawings were analyzed and categorized into 5 levels of understanding. Interviews were also conducted with 15 students who demonstrated misconceptions. Common misconceptions identified included thinking interphase is the resting phase of mitosis, and that the chromosome number is doubled/halved at different phases of mitosis. The study provides a way to identify misconceptions and address them to improve understanding of cell division concepts.
