Peter McGuire worked various jobs as a child to support his family after his father enlisted in the Civil War. He later became involved in the labor movement and helped organize one of the first major strikes in 1872 demanding better working conditions. This convinced him of the importance of organized labor. In 1881, he began organizing unions and helped found the first national carpenters union. On September 5, 1882 the first Labor Day parade was held in New York City, starting the tradition of celebrating workers and their contributions on the first Monday of each September. Labor Day later became a federal holiday in 1894.
