INTRODUCTION
Absenteeism is a common problem in every university. According to
Merriam Webster Dictionary, absenteeism is a “chronic absence”. In the
context of school, it is the habitual or intentional failure to attained
school. While every students may miss some school activities now and
then, absence becomes a problem when the student is away from
school for many days.
Going to school regularly is crucially important for a student’s
education and social skills chronically absent students are at a
disadvantage both socially and academically. They miss out on critical
stages of social interaction and development with their peers.
School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators,
teachers, parents, society in general, and pupils and particular.
Unaccepted absences have a negative effect on peer relationship
(Malcolm, Wilson , Davidson, Kirk 2003).
DISADVANTAGES
 Absenteeism also affects the teacher’s ability to present a class
work in a sequential and organized way. This can have an effect on the
progress of all the students in the class.
 STUDENTS:
 Harder to focus in longer classes, especially those with disabilities.
 Developmental social time diminishes.
 Do not learn time management time skills.
 TEACHERS:
 Failure to use various teaching strategies leads to boredom.
 Difficult to place transfer students.
• Society also suffers when school age children are not in school. These
children may hang out on the streets. Since they have nothing to do,
they resort to petty crimes like stealing other people’s belongings and
property. Others may become addicted to drugs or engage in other
destructive behavior. Thus, if a student keeps away from school for
too long, he may grow up to be a liability to his community and his
country as a whole.
COMMON FACTORS OF BEING ABSENT
Physical Health
- Issues related to the student’s
physical and mental health appears
directly related to the student
attendance(Kearney, 2008).
Chronic health conditions are
among the most significant
predictors for student
absenteeism. This review found
that asthma is one of the
leading predictors for students
absenteeism (center for disease
control, 2009, Kearney,2008).
 Family Socio-economic Status and
Place of Residence
-Family socio-economics status
wield as significant influence
on the likelihood that students
will attend school regularly
(Crowder and South, 2003;
Henry, 2007; Reid, 2005).
 Contributing Factors and
Consequences of Truancy
- Truancy is similar to
absenteeism, but truancy is
an unexcused absence from
school or class without
parental knowledge or
consent.
 Contributing Factors and
Consequences of Absenteeism
- Absenteeism is a period of time
when a students does not attend
school (Teasley, 2004). Student
absenteeism is a problem with in
school systems involving all ages
and there is little evidence that
attendance rates are improving
(Reid, 2003).
Transportation
- A lack of reliable
transportation is a primary
factor in chronic absenteeism
for students, as communities
have become more dependent
on the family vehicle to
transport children to school.
Bullying
- Is unwanted, aggressive
behavior among school aged
children that involves a real or
perceived power imbalance. The
behavior is repeated, or has the
potential to be repeated over
time. Bullying includes actions
such as making threats,
spreading rumors, attacking
someone physically or verbally,
and excluding someone from a
group on purpose.
CAUSES OF ABSENTEEISM
 Lack of interest
- students could be
lucking interest in the
study, which could be
as a result of content
that is difficult for them
to grasp hence pushing
them away from school.
Teacher approach
- the approach used by
teachers may not be
understood by the students
and this could lead them to
lose interest in school.
Punitive attendance policy
place a big role in
absenteeism too.
Diseases
- some diseases like
asthma which requires
attention and care as
well as an environment
that is warm and not
dusty could make
students remain home.
 School Infrastructural
Facilities
-lack of libraries, sports
facilities is a hindrance to
attendance of school
among students.
 Entertainment –accessibility of entertainment facilities like
cinemas could divert attention of some students from
school.
 Pamperness from the family –students who get excessive
pocket money from their families are most likely to absent
themselves from school since they need time to spend the
money.
EFFECTs OF ABSENTEEISM
 Low grades-being near that extreme of a specified range
which is lowest.
 Laziness-Lazy students normally do not attend classes and
sleep too much. In most instances, they remain in their
room watching movies and listening to music.
 Peers
 Affect the academic performance
PERSONS INVOLVED
 Students
 Professional: excluding nurses, physicians, and teachers.
 Managers / Executive
 Service Workers
 Clerical / Office
 School Teachers
 Nurses
 Transportation
 Manufacturing / Production
 Business Owners
 Installation / Repair
 Construction / Mining
 Physicians
 Farmers / Foresters / Fishers
4 TYPES OF ABSENTEEISM
1. Authorized Absenteeism
2. Unauthorized

3. Willful Absenteeism
4. Absenteeism Caused By
