Banco Desio sought to simplify business process integration and increase security by implementing single sign-on (SSO) across its applications. Micro Focus OnWeb helped convert host applications, including a proprietary credit application, into web applications accessible through SSO. This provided a single password for 1500 employees across all systems, while also allowing for future application integrations using SSO. Banco di Desio e della Brianza was established jointly by
landowners and businessmen as an agricultural credit bank in
Italy in 1909. Today this independent financial institution has
150 branches throughout Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna,
Tuscany, Lazio and Veneto.
The structure of Banco Desio’s banking model is based upon
innovative and modern information systems. The Bank continues
to adapt its technology over time to meet the changing
requirements of the banking industry and its users. Maintaining
these enhancements demands stringent management and security
of the identification processes that enable access to different
banking applications.
Until recently, the bank’s system users were required to remember
different access codes for many applications. Each employee had
multiple passwords to memorize relating to a procedure with
different authentication systems. With over 1500 employees, the
numbers involved were significant.
Security compromised by integration challenges
Banco Desio’s authentication system was burdened with delays,
compromising security. Also, users would leave passwords
displayed on their desktop computers to avoid having to memorize
them.
With security a priority, the Information Systems and Organization
Division of Banco Desio, in tandem with IT provider Cedacri, set
out to streamline the system. Identifying a solution to integrate
and access Single Sign On (SSO) would reduce the number of user
passwords and increase system security.
Challenge
When delays and problems updating passwords compromised
systems security at Banco Desio, it looked for a solution to unify
authentication between the proprietary application, the credit
division and the process offered for all other applications.

2. Although a new SSO solution was initially installed at the
bank branches and corporate office in 2002, difficulties
continued. While users could access various applications
with the single username and password, a proprietary
application used by the Desio Credit Division remained
inaccessible. The emulator was unable to integrate and
access SSO.
Converting into web applications for SSO
capability
Banco Desio needed a solution that would convert host
applications, including the difficult proprietary Desio Credit
Division application, into web applications. This could
then be accessed via both the web and SSO. Banco Desio
used Micro Focus OnWeb’s development and distribution
platform to develop a script that would overcome the
problem. The Desio Credit Division application could
then be accessed through the existing SSO solution and
support full integration of future in-house applications.
Micro Focus worked with Banco Desio and Cedacri, on
whose server the Single Sign On resides, to develop a
customized solution which allowed integration with Desio
Credit applications and Cedacri’s hosted SSO. Today,
Banco Desio has a single password requirement across
all applications. As well as SSO alignment with other
institutions served by Cedacri, the bank now has the
ability to integrate SSO with proprietary and internally
developed applications, today and in the future.

As Antonio Beltrame, Head of Architecture and the

The deployment of Micro Focus OnWeb now enables
the Italian bank to export documents and data to a
PDF format, using the iPrint feature in OnWeb. The
web interface allows for the printing of client-driven
documents, such as contracts and forms, in a PDF format
with a graphic layout that complies with Banco Desio’s
company image.
Through an emulator, users can access the Micro Focus
OnWeb application and carry out any command using
a customized web interface. The resulting documents
include logos and layouts consistent with Banco Desio’s
corporate image. The Micro Focus OnWeb solution has
increased the bank’s efficiency and decreased costs by
eliminating the need for local print terminals.
Improved security, management and
customer experience
The implementation of the Micro Focus OnWeb solution
has been very well received. Internal customers have
commented on improved management and ease-of-
use with the cutback to one single password and IT
professionals now handle an application that is simple to
use.

initiated a new policy that increases our internal capacity
to develop our own applications,” says Tiziano Eugenio
Colombo, of Banco Desio’s Information Systems and
