When Samsung Electronics released Galaxy Note 7 in 20016, the phone received a lot of positive reviews from technology enthusiasts. But the Phone had a battery defect which led to massive losses by the company

 The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was unveiled by Samsung
Electronics in 2006
 It was the first phone by Samsung Electronics that had a
symmetrical connector.
 It was also the last phone that had a home button in the
Galaxy Note Series
 Note 7’s pre-order record was the highest in South Korea
 It received a lot of positive reviews from technology
enthusiasts because of its flawless interface

3. The Problem
 Battery defects caused the devices to overheat and
explode or combust
 Defect 1: The batteries had a design flaw especially with
the upper right corner which led to short circuit
 Defect 2: Replacement batteries had a manufacturing
issue as a result of welding defect from the
manufacturing process

4. The Root Problem

 Main cause: The negative electrode of the phones device was
deflected in the upper-right corner
 More cause: The battery’s negative electrode had its tip
incorrectly located in the curve as compared to it being on the
planar area
Defect 2
 Main cause: The positive electrode had high welding burrs which
led to the penetration of separator and insulation tap thus
causing direct contact between the negative electrode and the
positive tab
 More cause: Most batteries were missing the insulation tape

5. Manufacturing Process
Samsung Electronics’ batteries are produced by its
subsidiary Samsung SDI
A short circuit in a battery may result when the
separator has been damaged since it results to
negative and positive electrodes meeting with the
jellyroll

6. The Aftermath
 Samsung Electronics' operating profits went down by 33%
as compared to the previous quarter in 2016.
 It lost at least $17 billion in revenues from the recall of
the phones
 Galaxy Note 7 is considered as the device having the
shortest life span of all Samsung smartphones.
 Samsung released Galaxy Note Fan Edition in 2017 which
is the refurbished version of Galaxy Note 7.

7. Conclusion
 The results from the Samsung's study showed that
manufacturing issues were to blame for the Note 7
battery explosion incidents
 After realizing the problem with the battery, the company
informally recalled the devices.
 The recall impacted the Samsung’s business including the
perception of the customers
