A 16-year-old boy injured his right knee while playing football when he missed a kick. His knee dislocated but reduced spontaneously. On examination, he had significant swelling and limited range of motion of his knee from 0 to 120 degrees. Tests for ligament damage were negative but the medial facet of his patella was tender.
