JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH TEACH FOR CANADA
POSITION: Director of Communications
Teach For Canada is looking for a dynamic, hard‐working, team‐oriented
changemaker to lead our communications and public engagement efforts.
The basics
Job term: Full‐time, permanent
Salary: $55,000 per year plus benefits
Start date: April 4, 2016 (negotiable)
Location: Toronto, Ontario with occasional travel
Closing date: March 7, 2016
Application method: Cover letter and resume to apply@teachforcanada.ca
Our approach
Overall, Canadian education is a success story. But high overall quality masks deep
inequality. On First Nations reserves, 3 in 5 students do not complete high school.
Small communities often face challenges recruiting and retaining teachers. And, too
often, new teachers arrive in northern and Indigenous communities without the
preparation and support they need to succeed—and stay—in the classroom.
Teach For Canada has joined northern First Nations communities in the movement to
make education more equal. We are a non‐profit organization that recruits, prepares,
and supports outstanding certified teachers.
Our culture
We dream big. Teach For Canada believes that committed, passionate teachers with
strong leadership characteristics can ignite positive change. Our small, tightly knit
team works long but inspired hours. Our workplace culture is intense and
collaborative. We value lived experience and new ideas.
If you prefer working alone, dislike ambiguity, and adhere to a very strict schedule,
then Teach For Canada probably isn’t right for you. But if you’re looking for a fun,
fast‐paced, multi‐faceted, energizing, and rewarding work environment that will push
you every single day, then we want to hear from you.
2. Your responsibilities
The Director of Communications will report directly to the Executive Director and will work
with our full‐time staff, Board of Directors, Student Ambassadors, Circle of Advisors, and
Advisory Council to develop and lead our communications strategy. Responsibilities include:
Develop a long‐term communications strategy that engages teachers, community
partners, donors, and the general public
Manage relationships with our communications vendors including designers, website
developers, photographers, cinematographers, and others
Manage content generation for our website and all social media platforms including
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, and others
Work with our team and designers to create all branded materials including teacher
recruitment materials, teacher handbook, student ambassador handbook, mentor
handbook, community profiles, annual report, fundraising materials, and others
Develop and distribute a newsletter on a quarterly basis
Manage all relationships with media
Ensure brand consistency across all print and digital platforms
Your fit
You are an exceptional writer. You are able to produce professional press releases,
blog posts, tweets, and newsletters.
You are a builder. Creating things from scratch excites you—whether it’s a multi‐year
strategy or a newsletter template.
You are a jack‐of‐all tech. You are highly proficient with photo editing software and
basic HTML. You learn other tech quickly.
You are a relationship‐builder. You enjoy meeting new people and you have
experience discussing complex topics with respect and professionalism.
You are a perfectionist. You believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing
right—every single time.
You see the bigger picture. You have a deep appreciation and respect for the history,
culture, and goals of Indigenous communities in Canada.
You have moral imagination. You have the humility to see the world as it is, and the
audacity to imagine the world as it could be.
