Capital budgeting is the process of planning long-term investments for projects that have a life of at least one year. There are formal methods for capital budgeting like net present value, internal rate of return, and profitability index. Riordan Manufacturing produces plastic products and is considering relocating its China operations to Shanghai which could result in significant cost savings and better positioning in Asian and European markets. Relocating would require investing in property in Shanghai, building a new plant, and buying new equipment, but both plants could be maintained to increase production.

Our initial decision to locate our China operations in Hangzhou was driven largely by the fact
that our Chinese partners already had facilities there and the city’s proximity to the Qiantang
River. We thought that the river access which led on to Hangzhou Bay would be sufficient to
handle our shipping needs.
As the production volume from the China plant has increased, we are seeing that significant
savings can be had by utilizing container shipping companies such as the China Shipping
Container Lines, a branch of the China Shipping (Group) Company. Most of the container
shipping companies utilize ports in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
While the Shanghai port is only 180 kilometers away from our current location, we are incurring
additional logistical steps in shipping out of Shanghai.
• Currently, our products are trucked to a port on the Qiantang River and loaded into
shipping containers. The containers are then loaded onto barges that make their way to
the Shanghai port. The barges dock in Shanghai where the containers are offloaded
and trucked to another area of the port where they are loaded onto to the ships that will
take them to their final destina.

More and more companies every day decide to begin doing business in Africa. Research is necessary to determine the best strategy for being the first mover in many African countries (i.e., being the first competitor doing business in various countries).

Step 2- Look for demographic data on 10 African countries (same thing you can attach demographic data on 10 African countries in the paper)
Step 3- Gather competitive information regarding the presence of office-supply firms doing business in Africa.
Step 4- List in prioritized order eight countries in which you would recommend Staples to build stores. Country 1 is your best, and country 2 is your next best. Based on your research, indicate how many staples stores you would recommend building over the next three years in each county. Our initial decision to locate our China operations in Hangzhou was driven largely by the fact
that our Chinese partners already had facilities there and the city’s proximity to the Qiantang
River. We thought that the river access which led on to Hangzhou Bay would be sufficient to
handle our shipping needs.
As the production volume from the China plant has increased, we are seeing that significant
savings can be had by utilizing container shipping companies such as the China Shipping
Container Lines, a branch of the China Shipping (Group) Company. Most of the container
shipping companies utilize ports in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
While the Shanghai port is only 180 kilometers away from our current location, we are incurring
additional logistical steps in shipping out of Shanghai.
• Currently, our products are trucked to a port on the Qiantang River and loaded into
shipping containers. The containers are then loaded onto barges that make their way to
the Shanghai port. The barges dock in Shanghai where the containers are offloaded
and trucked to another area of the port where they are loaded onto to the ships that will
take them to their final destina.

The company’s vision is to become the leading global plastics manufacturers. The company’s goals are to ensure that it supplies high quality plastic products to its customers in the global arena.
Competitive Advantage
Riordan Manufacturing has a high competitive advantage over its competitors. Riordan manufacturing was established many years ago and from past experience, the company has endured tough economic times and performances. Due to these experiences, the company has been able to adapt well and formulate proper mechanisms through which it can overcome many of the challenges and difficulties that it is faced with. New companies are more likely to be hard hit by tough economic times and depressions. While they are faced by such challenges, Riordan is likely to continue to register a successful trend in performance (Ghemawat, 2007).
The company has a strong economic base. A strong economic base is of great importance in helping the company expand its operations and open up new centers and branches worldwide. Large amounts of capital are required by a company in expanding international operations and branches. Many other companies that manufacture plastic products are less likely to expand their global operations due to lack of an adequate supply of capital resources (John, 1999).
The company has a good and positive management background. The healthy management provides good leadership and management of the company’s resources in a wise and most informed manner. The management is vital to the success of a company since the decisions a company makes are paramount to the success of the business. The managers are experienced enough and can steer positive development in the company.
The company’s large capital base enables it to conduct R&D in enhancing the manufacture of better and more improved products. Through R&D, Riordan manufacturing is able to develop new brands and manufacture better products unlike their counterparts who aren’t able to inject much into R&D activities. This gives Riordan an upper hand in the development of its products and meeting or enhancing customer satisfaction (Ghemawat, 2007).

In addition, it determines the organization’s long-term investments for example new plants, new machinery, replacement machinery, new products, and research and development projects. There are many formal methods to use in capital budgeting, including the techniques such as Net present value, profitability index, internal rate of return, modified internal rate of return, and equivalent annuity. “The capital budgeting decision involves the planning of expenditures for a project with a life of at least one year, and usually considerably longer” (Block & Hirt 2005). In this assignment team “D” is to describe the role and importance of capital budgeting. Team “D” has chosen to use from the virtual organizations Riordan Manufacturing. Riordan Manufacturing is a plastics manufacturer, which they are a global company they employ 550 people they have projected an annual earnings of $46 million. Riordan Industries, a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion, own the company. Riordan Manufacturing products include plastic beverage containers, which are produced at there Albany, Georgia, they products custom plastic parts, which are produced at there plant in Pontiac, Michigan, and plastic fan parts, which are produced at there facilities in Hang Zhou, China. The company's does there research and development at there corporate headquarters in San Jose.
- 3. Capital Budgeting 3 Riordan Manufacturing’s operates as a decentralized unit of Riordan Manufacturing in China. It prepares its own electric fan; it has sales throughout the world, which includes the United States. Riordan Industries initial decide to locate there China operations in Hang Zhou, there Chinese partners had facilities already located there and the cities is located near the Qiantang River. Riordan Industries believe that relocation there China operations to the city of Shanghai will result in significant cost savings, this will put there company into a better position to market and ship there Chinese products throughout Asia and Europe. Riordan Manufacturing can invest into property in Shanghai, then build a new plant, and buy new equipment. These investments will save the company money in addition; with the sales going up, they could maintain operations in the second plant in Hang Zhou. By investing in property in Shanghai, this would first place the company into a major shipping port. Once obtaining the property then Riordan Manufacturing can invest by building a new plant on that property. Then Riordan Manufacturing can fill that plant with new equipment thus leaving the plant in Hang Zhou intact able to produce the product they are now producing now this increase the balance sheet of Riordan Industries.
