History of
CANDY CANES
The Beginning
• Candy Canes originated in Germany 250 years
ago and were a straight white stick.
True or False
• a choirmaster, in 1670, was worried about the
children sitting quietly through the long Christmas
nativity service. So he gave them something to eat to
keep them quiet! As he wanted to remind them of
Christmas, he made them into a 'J' shape like a
shepherds crook, to remind them of the Shepherd’s
that visited baby Jesus on the first Christmas.
Stripes
• Around 1900, stripes were added and
flavored.
• Red=Peppermint
• Green-Wintergreen
What the Colors Mean
• Red-could mean the blood that shed when
Jesus died on the cross.
• Green-could represent the hyssop plant used
for purifying in the Bible.
Candy Canes Today
• Now we can get candy canes in all flavors,
shapes, and sizes
