- 7. Japanese teacher networks • Support Japanese ALTs in Canberra schools. • Run essay competitions for local Japanese language students. • Donated Japanese language books, with JETAA message inside.

- Focusing on the social side of JETAA Canberra is somewhat difficult as JETAA members are less interested in attending. - only 1 returning JET attended the welcome back celebration where we provided free food for returnees We have had an increase in people attending oshaberikai Canberra members have children and other commitments Q: Have other chapters had similar experiences? Ideas for family friendly activities? We are exploring ikebana, sushi making, kite making on weekends (children’s day).

- Networking with AJF and Japan desk at DFAT opens up invitations to Japan-related functions with VIP speakers and guests. Also receive advance warning of ticket sales to prestigious events. Eg. Asia Society breakfast 0n 25 March, where Tony Abbott spoke Australia’s relationship with Japan, Korea and China prior to his official overseas visit in April 2014. Official Dinner in honour of PM Abe at parliament house, 8 July (PM Abbott and other VIPs).
- Yearly festival run by Japanese Embassy and ACT Government Sell beer and Gyoza – easy to cook, popular with the crowds. Raise approx. $3,000-$4,000 every year. Have also supported the annual multicultural festival in the past. This has become too long a day due to a decrease in volunteers. Temperatures of 40+ degrees in recent years. Q: How do other chapters fundraise?
- Networking with ACT Government and AJF to become involved in celebrations. Canberra might be hosting the next Oceania in 2016 due to these festivities. No promises but it could be a great time to be in Canberra. You can tell everyone that I've already discussed with Raelene and if South Is. could take it for 2015 then that would be fab.
- Socialise with ALTs – buddy program. Cultural exchange and ‘paying it forward’ / giving back to Japan Run essay competitions with prizes for Japanese students to encourage language study. ‘donated by JETAA Canberra’ sticker inside. Promote JET program to students. Promote JETAA to teachers and local schools. Any teachers in the room? Ideas for how we can support more?
- Longstanding Japanese restaurant chain lost one store to a kitchen fire. This business owner has supported JETAA events for years with donations for trivia nights and running sushi making nights. Together with AJS and CJC organised a dinner with over 80 guests to support the business recover. Article in the Canberra times. We will run a trivia night in conjunction with AJS to raise funds for the Tohoku disaster victims. Past president and social coordinator (still active members) were Fukushima Jets. Yearly memorial service. Donated $3,500 to Embassy’s disaster relief fund in 2011.
