Visa Description
A student needs a study permit for studying & staying in Canada which
serves as a visa for the duration he/she stays there, if the duration of the
course for which the student has applied is not more than 6 months then it is
not required. A student permit has to be renewed after some period of time,
some of the benefits of the student permit are:
 While studying you can do part-time work on-campus.
 You can also work off-campus.
 You can apply for internships.
 Explore job opportunity while studying.
Cost of Visa
In order to study in Canada, you will need to obtain a Canadian study permit,
which serves as a Canadian student visa for the duration of your stay. You do
not need a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts six months
or less. Applying for a study permit costs CA$150 (~US$110) which
translates to Rs. 8,200 (approx.).
Processing fees must be paid when the application is submitted. The
payment must be attached to the application form. Fees are payable in
Canadian dollars or Indian Rupees. Only bank drafts (demand drafts) or
certified cheques are accepted; cash is not accepted for fee payment. The
bank draft should be made for the exact amount and in favour of “Canadian
High Commission” or “Receiver General for Canada” payable at New Delhi.
If you are using VAC services, please note that VAC service charges are not
included in the cost of processing temporary visa applications. A receipt will
be issued for each payment received. Please keep the receipt as proof of
payment.

Documents
You should apply for the student visa after you get the college acceptance
letter. You should begin with the visa process around June, if you aiming for
the September intake.
Following are the documents needed to apply.
1. Proof of acceptance
If you plan to attend any school (primary or secondary), college, university or
other educational institution in Canada, the school must complete and send
you a letter of acceptance. You must include the original letter with your study
permit application.
2. Proof of identity
You must provide:
 A valid passport or travel document for you and each accompanying
family member. The passport or travel document must allow you to
return to the country that issued it. Citizens of the United States do not
need a passport. However, you must carry proper identification that
proves your citizenship or permanent residence.
 Two recent passport-size photos of you and each accompanying family
member. The name and date of birth of the person should be written on
the back of each photo.
2
3. Proof of financial support
You must prove that you can support yourself and the family members who
accompany you while you are in Canada. You can prove that you have
sufficient funds to support yourself in Canada by showing some of the
following:
 proof of a Canadian bank account in your name if money has been
transferred to Canada;
 proof of a student/education loan from a financial institution;
 your bank statements for the past four months;
 a bank draft in convertible currency;
 proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees;
 a letter from the person or institution providing you with money; and
 proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or
are in a Canadian-funded educational program.

If there are foreign-exchange control measures in your country, you must
provide proof that the exchange control authorities will allow you to export
funds for all of your expenses.
4. Letter of explanation
In some cases, you may wish to apply for a study permit even if you do not
need one right away. There are benefits to having a study permit, even if you
do not require one. If you have a valid study permit, you can:
 work part time on campus at the college or university at which you are
registered as a full-time student; and
 apply to renew your study permit from within Canada, if you decide to
continue studying in Canada.
If you decide that you want to continue your studies in another program after
you complete your short-term course or program, you must apply through a
Canadian visa office outside Canada for a study permit if you do not already
have one.
If you are applying for a study permit even though you do not need one, you
should include a letter that explains why you are applying. The letter will
inform the visa officer that you understand your options. For example, the
letter might say:
“Dear Visa Officer,
I would like a study permit for my eight-week English course because I would
like to apply to a Canadian-university program after I finish the English
course.”
4
How to apply?
There are several steps to apply for a visa.
1. Check the processing times - The visa application cycle might take
anywhere from 3-4 weeks. It is advisable to go through the Canadian
consulate website to know the approximate time taken to process the student
visa. Please note that the time shown is not a guarantee and is just an
estimate.
2. Determine how you will apply. There are two ways to apply:
(a) Apply online
To apply online you must have access to a scanner or camera to create
electronic copies of your documents for uploading and have a valid credit
card for payment. You will still be required to provide a finger scan at the
regional Visa Application Centre (VAC).
(b) Apply in person
Download the application kit and read the instruction guide. The instruction
guide contains important information about study permits and instructions to
help you complete your application. Read the guide carefully and use the
document checklist.
3. Fill out the VFS Consent Form and attach it with your application form. You
need this form to get the assistance of VFS services for your visa filing
process.
4. Pay the processing fee - Note that when submitting application via the
VFS, in person or by mail, visa fees must be paid in addition to VFS Global
service charges. The processing fee is non-refundable in all cases.
5
5. If your spouse/common-law partner and/or children are accompanying you
and you are applying for temporary resident visas, work permits or study
permits for them, then you will need to pay the appropriate processing fees
for them.
6. Submit your application and supporting documents - Since you need to
give your biometrics, you can’t mail in your application and will have to visit
the VFS office.
Once you are there, pay the service charges and hand them your complete
application to obtain a receipt. This receipt contains your unique tracking
number which you will need to track the progress of your application online.
7. In case your application is approved you will receive notification from the
Government of Canada requesting for your passport. You can submit the
passport and passport request letter in person or through VFS.
Dependents
If you are an international student bringing your spouse or partner with you to
Canada, they may be eligible for a work permit that will allow them to work
during your studies.
1.When should you apply?
Your spouse/partner can apply for a work permit before or after they arrive in
Canada. The work permit will usually be issued for the same length of time as
your study permit. Your spouse/partner does not need a job offer to apply for
a work permit.
In some cases, Canadian visa offices abroad will process spouse/partner
work permit applications at the same time as study permit applications. In this
case, you will need to include the additional fee for the work permit and
complete the
6
work permit application for your spouse/partner, available from the website of
the consulate.
Most spouse/partners come to Canada as visitors first and apply for a work
permit after they are in Canada. If your spouse or partner does not require a
TRV, they may be able to apply for a work permit at the border or airport
where they enter Canada.
2.Work Permit
If you wish to take academic, professional or vocational training at a
university, college or other educational institution in Canada, you will need a
study permit before you enter Canada.
In order to work off-campus, you need to have studied in Canada for at least
one year (full time) and you must apply for a work permit through the CIC. If
your application is approved, you are only eligible to work up to 20 hours per
week while school is in session (and full-time during breaks and the summer).
There is a CAN$ 150 fee to apply for the work permit.
