4. HOW DO COMMUNITIES QUALIFY?
 Canadian communities who meet our 10-point
set of criteria qualify for designation.
 Community representatives complete an on-
line application form and send it in for
assessment of the criteria.
 Assistance can be provided to complete the
form or to create an action plan to meet the
criteria.

5. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CRITERIA?
1. The municipality has a climate change plan with
short-term and long-term targets and time- frames
in place
2. The municipality has a community energy plan in
place.
3. The municipality has an energy plan in place for
its own facilities.
4. The municipality has adopted targets for a
proportion of total community energy demand to be
met by renewable energy.
5. The municipality has established policies and
incentives for solar electricity and solar thermal
utilization for residential homeowners.

6. WHY SOLAR CITIES?
 The Solar Cities program is recognized all
over the world with governments or non-
profit groups setting the criteria.
 Local governments have the best
opportunity to lead change and set climate
change mitigation policies through internal
policies.
 The Solar City project provides a local focus
for citizen involvement in renewable energy
projects.

 The Sun is the most abundant energy
source on the planet.
 Solar technologies are becoming much
more affordable.
 Solar energy is clean energy.
 There is an abundant supply of Solar
Energy in North East BC.
