An exploration into the pedagogical benefits of using social media: can educators incorporate social media into pedagogy successfully?
Research Conference 2019
Quantitative Methods- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
This document discusses quantitative methods for data collection including experiments, controlled observations, surveys, structured interviews, and polls. It describes the key aspects of each method such as using pre and post tests for experiments. It also covers topics like questionnaire design, types of questions, scales, and internet surveys. The document provides advantages and disadvantages of different quantitative data collection methods.
Descriptive Statistics- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
In descriptive statistics there is substantial focus on how data is presented in visual form, hence, the many forms of graphical presentation that are used. For example, many data software packages now include: frequency and percentage tables, bar charts, histograms, line graphs, pie charts, high and low charts, scatterplots, stem and leaf displays, and boxplots.
Introduction to Quantitative Research- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Quantitative research methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.
Typically large sample sizes
Inferential Statistics- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Chi-square test – tests whether two categorical variables are associated
Bivariate Correlation – to what extent are two variables related
Linear Regression- how well does a set of variables ‘predict’ the value of another (dichotomous) variable
ANOVA- check if the means of more than two groups are significantly different from each other
T-test- statistical significance in means of two groups
Data Quality in Quantitative Research- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
In qualitative research we are primarily concerned with trustworthiness and credibility
Quantitative research is concerned with reliability (can the results be replicated), and validity (do the instruments measure what they are supposed to)
Qualitative Research- Part 1- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
The research process can be vague, like knitting fog and looking up into the clouds and seeing shapes. And, two people see different things in the same cloud formations!
Qualitative Analysis- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Non-standardised and complex in nature
Demanding process- not an ‘easy option’
This happens during data collection, therefore preparing is key, recordings, transcripts etc
Understanding characteristics and language
You do this by finding patterns in your data and by producing explanations
Reflection
Qualitative Data Quality- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
What you need to know – data quality issues
Reliability/dependability
Forms of bias
Cultural differences
Generalisability/transferability
Validity/credibility

Qualitative Research- Part 2- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
This document discusses different qualitative research strategies including narrative research, phenomenological research, grounded theory, ethnography, and case studies. It provides brief definitions and descriptions of each approach. It also contrasts qualitative and quantitative research, highlighting differences in their philosophical perspectives, data collection and analysis approaches, and goals. Finally, it covers some key aspects of qualitative research such as purposeful sampling of participants, the use of "key participants" to provide rich insights, and the concept of data saturation in determining when data collection is complete.
Research Approaches- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Deductive reasoning
Deductive reasoning involves inferring that if propositions A and B are both true, then this implies that C is also true. The classic example is over two thousand years old and involves the question of whether the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates was mortal.
Research Philosophy- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
What is the nature of reality?
What is the nature of knowledge?
Unless you have studied philosophy you may not have considered these questions at any length
Saunders' (2007) Research Onion- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
At the simplest level, Saunders’ research onion describes the different decisions you’ll need to make when developing a research methodology – whether that’s for your dissertation, thesis or any other formal research project.
As you work from the outside of the onion inwards, you’ll face a range of choices that progress from high-level and philosophical to tactical and practical in nature. This also mimics the general structure for the methodology chapter.
Concept of reflective practice- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Reflective Practice is the foundation of professional development; it derives meaning from experiences and takes insights and allows you to turn them into practical strategies for both personal growth and organisational impact
Ethics in Research- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Ethics needs to be considered at all points in the study.
For example, the ethics of interview questions and the interpretation of the results.
Research design
Data collection
Research relationships
Interpretation of results
Writing up
Data dissemination
Literature Review- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
A review of the previous experiments and investigations done within our chosen topic area.
Shows how your chosen topic fits with the research that has gone before and puts this into context.
‘A researcher cannot perform significant research without first understanding the literature in the field’ (Boote and Beile, 2005: 3)
Professional Identity- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
A useful definition might start with defining self-identity as ‘the way in which I see, describe or define myself’.
Yet there is more to the concept of identity than this definition suggests.
In this session, you will be asked to consider both self-identity and ‘ascribed’ identity. In addition to different ideas about identity, you will explore the ways in which these impact on and affect social work.
Linda Brimm’s Global Mindsets- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Characteristics of Global Cosmopolitans
Change is normal and positive
Not a single set of cultural rules
Adaptation to new ways of thinking
Not a fixed identity
Learning is central
Take risks
Critical Thinking and Writing- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
"Most formal definitions characterize critical thinking as the intentional application of rational, higher order thinking skills, such as analysis, synthesis, problem recognition and problem solving, inference, and evaluation"
What is research? Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Not just finding things out! Goal is to address one or a few very specific questions.
To be research it must
1. Involve a systematic inquiry/investigation
2. Be informed by theory
3. Answer specific questions
4. Contribute to knowledge
Many diverse approaches reflecting varied philosophical frameworks
Approach may be induction (creating theory) or deduction (testing relationships implied by existing theory)
Self-reflection- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
John Dewey (1859 -1952)
A key figure in progressive education
Incidental reflection: active at the time/an event is occurring
Systematic reflection: through making sense of that experience through systematic reflection
Donald SchÖn (1930 -1997)
Much concerned how society, organisations and individuals learn and develop the term ‘ reflective practitioner’
Reflection-in-action: respond flexibly to a given situation and prevent us from sticking to rigid plans
Reflection-on-action: to think about an event; what happened/how other people react, what the outcome was/what is the interrelationship between our actions and outcome
Professional Self- Dr Ryan Thomas WilliamsRyan Williams
Professional identity may mean different things to different individuals in a professional context
Job titles/roles; People defining themselves through a job title
Engagement with CPD; It contributes to defining how people see themselves which may change over time.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.
