2. Some Information
• As India advances, access to western food is becoming more common.
Much of these are in the form of “fast food,” a notoriously unhealthy
source of nutrition.
• At the same time, many people value traditional Indian delicacies such
as fried sweets and samosas, often found on “lahris.”
• This unhealthy food consumption puts Indians particularly at risk for
chronic diseases that occur due to lifestyle habits such as Type 2
Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension.

4. About Diabetes
• Many know it is caused by insulin resistance due to impaired insulin
secretion or hyperglycemia.
• Most don’t know that after people develop it, it can take 3-5 years for
symptoms to show, if not tested.
• By this time, the body has already suffered significant vascular
complications.

5. About Hypertension
• Also called “High Blood Pressure,” it causes the heart to work much
harder than normal to circulate blood, causing complications over
time.
• Like diabetes, this illness is rarely accompanied by any symptoms, and
can only accurately be diagnosed through regular testing.
• Hypertension is a precursor to many other serious illnesses.

7. Our Goal
• Our aim is to find new cases of pre-diabetes and diabetes, pre-hypertension
and hypertension and to inform people so they can improve their health.
• We hope to promote healthy lifestyle habits over medication.
• Dietary modifications, physical exercise, and weight loss are the first line of
defense against both diseases, and have been shown to have more lasting and
improved health outcomes than medication.

8. How Will We Do It?
• Hold camps in societies to let people have easy and convenient access.
• We take blood pressure (automated)
• Fasting Blood Sugar (pin prick)
• Record weight and height (for BMI)

9. But We Need Help
• The more people that participate, the better.
• We need help from local, community leaders to get our message out
and ensure that people in our camp location know of the time and
place.
• Bottom line is, we want to helpYOU, the people, and we need the
people’s help to do it.
• All that needs to be done is fill out a short questionnaire (5 minutes)
and attend camp to get tested (2 minutes if no wait time).
