The document describes the design process for a portable spice container set for outdoor camping. It aims to redesign existing spice containers to be medium-weight, portable, and durable for cooking over a campfire. Several initial container concepts are presented, but they are deemed too different from the target brand Primus' outdoor cooking aesthetic. The final design takes inspiration from Primus' campfire cookware handles. It consists of a two-part sliding lid container that can hold different sizes of spices without touching them. Multiple containers can connect together for expanded storage. The set will be made from sustainable materials like reclaimed wood, aluminum, and recyclable plastic.

Intent
Spices are important to a meal
but cannot replace a meal.
However, people have created
home DIY spice container for
camping to add favours to their
meals.
As a result, I would like to
redesign a spice containers
that are medium weight and
portable for outdoor cooking by
the camp fire side.

Primus has been recognized for
pioneering outdoor cooking
since 1892.
A culinary life outdoors is
something they strive for and
they want to inspire people to
go out and eat more often
They aim to develop products
with as little environmental
impact as possible with analysing
the entire product life cycle in
the design process.
Primus’ product can be seem
as a reliable friend that will see
regular use for many, many
years.

Container 1
This concept is inspire by the hourglass shape and
the old fashion salt and pepper container. As a
resutl, the design featuer a symmetry top and
bottom , and a narrow center. The narrow center is
mean to be the area to have strapping around to
hold the container to a soft casing or with another
contianer.

Container 2
This concept is inspire by the mid 19 century
design of tea tin and cookie containers. The end
result look like a muti-face test tube and I’m not
happy with it.

Container 3
Container 3 is a combination of container
1 and 2. It carryies the muti-facing surface
of container 2 and the hourglass look from
container 1.

3D Print
The 3D print come out slightly different compare to what I have in mind.
The overall size it is smaller. I wish it could be slightly bigger by 1-2cm, as
right now, the object can only hold maybe one oz of powder inside and
nothing more. In addition, the wall thickness are thicker than I expect.
The wall thickness turn out to be almost twice as thick as I would like it
to be. Moreover, the extra materials on all the curved angels area is not
ideal.

Final Concept
The final design is based on the shape of the handle of Primus’
campefire cookware.
After looking through the three different container I have created, I
felt all of them have moved away from the brand and the persona I’m
trying to target. The shape and the feeling simply does not speak the
same design language as my target brand.
Therefore, I took a step back and did a close study of Primus’ campfire
series. Through studying the shape of the cookwares, I have found my
answer.

Two part design lid that snap on
and off the case. The sliding lid
allows the user to have control
over the amount of spice being
sprinkle at each use without
physcially touching the spice. It
also fit the different type and size
of spices.
Flat surface on both side for easy
storage and can be easily stack
mutiply cases together.
Slidable join hinge allow the case to
be easily join with another case to
form groups of 2, 3 or more.

Dead Ends and Problems
On the left, I got
my measurement
of the triangles
wrong. For a
period of time I was
confuse why my
shape doesn’t line
up. Later, I realized
that i have right
triangles instead of
equilateral
triangles.
On the right, I was
building a shelf for
the containers. I
mean to have the
shelf so the con-
tainers can be use
as a system at
home and at the
campsite. Later
on, I realized it
is not necessary
since most people
wouldn’t bring their
favourite cookware
in the house with
them to campsites.
