Michael Callan
Mr. Callan is a 40 year veteran of the Fire Service. He served as a Captain with
the Wallingford, Connecticut Fire Department for 20 years. In June 2013 at the
International Haz Mat Conference in Baltimore he receives the prestigious John
M. Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award - Given annually by the International
Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to recognize a living individual who has had an
exceptionally distinguished career in the field of hazardous-materials
emergency response. In 2010 he was the recipient of the prestigious Norman
Y. Mineta Excellence in Transportation Award. The Mineta Award is given
annually by the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) to an
individual or team that made a significant and lasting contribution to the safety
of people, products and materials in transit. In 2001 he was selected as the
California Hazardous Materials Instructor of the Year. Michael Callan is the
author of the book Responding to Natural Gas Emergencies , Responding to
Electrical Emergencies and Responding to Utility Emergencies (RTUE) used extensively by the utility industry
for traditional textbook training of emergency responders and is the basis of and interactive training
program called RTUE Online. He is the author of the Pipeline Emergency Response DVD. He is also author of
the popular Street Smart Haz Mat Response by Red Hat Publications and is co-author of Hazardous Materials
Exposures - Emergency Response and Patient Care published by Brady / Prentice Hall.
Michael Callan is one of the lead instructors / mentors in the Virtual Terrorism Response Academy (VTRA)
developed by Dartmouth University's Interactive Media Lab. VTRA is a reusable advanced distance learning
program for first responder terrorism response. In 1989 at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC)
in Cincinnati he was selected from 7000 municipal and private sector instructors, as the International Society
of Fire Instructors' - George D. Post Instructor of the Year. He is developer of traditional and interactive
training modules for delivering the Department of Transportation / Pipeline Safety and Hazardous Materials
Administration’s Pipeline Emergencies Training. Pipeline Emergencies is distributed by the National
Association of Fire Marshals nationally to every state fire service training organization.
Mr. Callan has conducted hundreds of Train the Trainers throughout the United States on multiple subjects.
Mr. Callan is also the developer of the widely adopted Propane Emergencies Training Facilitator’s Guide and
PowerPoint programs used extensively by the US Fire Service. The training program has been adopted by
more than 30 state training fire schools for propane emergencies. He is the lead instructor on the video
training series by Emergency Resources Inc. - "Surviving the Hazardous Materials Incident".
He has conducts energy, pipeline, safety, chemical and emergency response training around the country for
Industrial and Municipal Haz-Mat Teams. He lists as clients, corporations such as Pipeline Association for
Public Awareness (PAPA), ComEd, Excel Energy, Puget Sound Energy, Wisconsin Utility Association, Vermont
State Fire School, Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau, Illinois State Fire Academy, Laclede Gas, Bristol-Myers
Squibb, Northeast Utilities, Louisiana Pacific, Sprint, Pacific Gas and Electric, US DOJ - ATF, NASA & Kennedy
Space Center, Duke Energy, General Motors, Ensign-Bickford Industries, Merck, Dupont, IBM, and National
