Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

- 1. California’s 911 Good Samaritan Law Aims to Help Overdose Victims Allied Wallet
- 2. Introduction • Founded in 2002, remains among today’s innovative fintech companies. Helping merchants around the world process payments through its seamless and secure platform, Allied Wallet supports local philanthropic organizations like the Brent Shapiro Foundation. The foundation, named in honor of the son of prominent attorney Robert Shapiro who died of an overdose, seeks to provide healthy alternative programs that keep kids and teens avoid addictions to drugs and alcohol. Among its other efforts, the Brent Shapiro Foundation played a part in advocating for the passage of California’s 911 Good Samaritan Law, in effect since January 1, 2013. The law, introduced in the state legislature as AB 472, specifies that any person who in good faith seeks medical attention for an overdose victim will not be subject to arrest or prosecution for using or possessing small amounts of controlled substances.

California’s 911 Good Samaritan Law • The law aims to prevent tragic deaths, like that of 24- year-old Brent Shapiro, due to substance abusers’ fear of prosecution if they summon medical help for themselves or others. Experts note that numerous fatalities can be prevented if overdose victims receive prompt medical attention. While the law works to protect witnesses to overdoses who possess small amounts of drugs intended for their own use, it does not immunize those who impede the work of first responders and law enforcement, who deal in drugs, or who endanger others by, for example, driving under the influence.
